Helmet bending ear....Cause permanent damage?

I'm concerned about the effect my son's helmet is having on his ears.

The helmet rotates slightly (no matter how much I try to prevent it)

and bends his left ear forward and covers his right ear. I'm afraid

of his left ear permanently growing into that bent shape.

Our orthotist isn't too concerned about it - he thinks it will stop

rotating, eventually, as he grows into the helmet and the ear won't be

an issue.

Has anyone had this experience? Is there any chance his ears could be

permanently effected by this?

Specifics:

- My son has been in his helmet for 5 weeks

- It's rotated since the beginning, and we just got him into a 2nd

helmet because the orthotist didn't think the first one was fitting well.

- He's 7 months old

Our therapist told me that it would take 3 to 4 months of continuous

pressure to have an adverse effect on the ear (my son's band was

just resting on his one ear the first week he was in it but it was

quickly fixed). I would say there's no immediate danger of permanent

damage. However, I would definitely be concerned that the right ear

is covered up. That should not be happening. What kind of band is

it? Is it possible to post a photo of what you're describing?

Anytime I have seen a band that completely shifts on the baby's head

to completely cover or even partially cover an ear, that's been a

sign of a bad fit. My son wore 2 DOCBands and they never shifted

that much.

Sorry to hear that you are dealing with this issue.

Check out my son's pictures in the S folder under Shane (near the end). This is a pic of his 2nd failed Hanger band. It bent his ear in half. We had problems with rotation from the start and when the 2nd band came in worse than the first we stopped treatment and went to Cranial Tech. Unfortunately, he didn't get his DOC Band until he was 9 months old. If I could go back and do it over I would have started out a CT.

We are currently waiting for our 2nd DOC Band, since he outgrew the first one. I know that it is hard, but if you feel that the product you have is not doing what it is supposed to do, you should explore other options. I deeply regret the time we lost when he was younger. His growth from 9-12 months was dramatically slower which is why we are giving it one more shot at CT.

Thank you and Leah,

I checked out Shane's pictures and I posted pics of - I'd love

to know what you guys think (and anyone else), about 's pics.

's ear looks a lot like Shane's. I'm curious to know what your

Orthotist said about Shane's ear when you addressed the issue.

I'm just grasping for anything here. I feel like things aren't going

well (especially after 5 weeks!) and yet, the closest Cranial Tech is

many hours away from us. Just not sure what to do.

I'm even wondering if this is all worth it if his ear is going to be

stuck that way or if his other ear, that is being covered, is going to

be hurt in any way. Ugh!

It has always been my understanding that the band should never cover up the

ear. It might rub up against the back of the ear but it should never

completely cover it. I would go back to the ortho for an adjustment and if

it still isn't fitting right demand a new band.
