Hi -

There are some repo success stories on our board but the majority of

active members did decide to band. If you haven't already, you might

want to check out the Older Plagio board and get their take on it.

There are many parents on that board that were never told to band or

dididn't band for one reason or another and are still living with

their regret. Their posts really motivated me to band my son even

though he was much older than was recommended, just to say I tried

what I could. Here is the link:

reasoning? Do you wish you had banded or are you glad you didnt band?

How has your childs head turned out from deciding not to band?

Dear ,

I think most of us have been in your shoes at some point. At our 4 month

check up, when my daughter was actually almost 5 months and my ped said

something about her flat spot and said to wait and see what happened and he

would check it again at her 6 month check up. Well, we did try to reposition my

daughter, but she had started moving around so much it was hard to keep anything

in place. So instead of wasting another month I went back when she was a little

over 5 months and got a script to get a band. I went through a plethora of

emotions while in the deciding process, guilt, sadness. But now that my daughter

has had her band for almost 3 weeks I am very at peace with it and my daughter

has never been phased by it. Plus during the first two weeks, she had a growth

spurt and is improving ahead of schedule. I sometimes now feel bad about not

banding right after our 4 month visit because between 4-6 months her head grew

5/8 of an inch, so we did miss

out on some growth. If you take pics and see improvement after a few weeks, it

may be worth it to keep trying repo, but if there is no change I would band as

young as possible while the baby is growing so fast!!!! Good Luck with your

decision, I know it is a hard one! But once the decision is made it is so much

easier!!

Thank you so much. This board is really helping me. Its hard when you try and talk to your family or friends about it and they look at you like you are crazy and say 'your baby's head is fine, lots of babies have flat spots, it'll round out, etc....' And then I read about complications with the band like skin irritation, ridges in foreheads, late in meeting milestones... its scaring me! I just need to make the decision after our CT consult. Because when I look at his head it doesnt seem that bad to me. I will take your advice and take pictures now. I have already been repo for about 2 weeks now. I shouldve taken a picture of his head earlier but better late than never! Thanks again...5 month old baby with plagioFrom: Roper <sbmcd15@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Monday, October 27, 2008 6:59:07 PMSubject: Re: Re: To band or not to band....

Wow you really tried a lot of repo techniques. Im bummed to hear they didnt work though. I wish I could get my guy to sleep on his tummy but he hates that. Our boys are the same age too. He is 5 months but was born a month early so he is technically 4 months as well. From what I am reading the younger they are the less time in the band. Is this true? Or is the best time between 6-12 months when they experience growth spurts?~ 5 month old with plagioFrom: aimeedavid2006 <aimeedavid2006@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 7:57:34 AMSubject: Re: To band or not to band....

,

You are definitely not alone in anything that you're feeling. I

noticed my son's flat spot when he was 2 months old. I aggressively

repositioned. He only sleeps on his tummy now - even at night. I

avoid car seats, play yards, swings, etc as much as possible. I even

got him a walker way before he could reach the floor with his feet

just to keep him off his head. I've been doing that for 2 months now,

and while his head has improved, I know that it will never improve to

my satisfaction without the band, and I didnt want to regret not

banding him. So, he's getting his on Friday at just over the age of

four months. It was a very difficult decision. No one wants their

kid in a helmet, with the skin problems that can occur and frankly

with other kids and parents wondering what's wrong with him. But,

especially at such a young age, the time that he is banded will be

just a blink - but without banding, it will be a lifetime of living

with an issue that could have been corrected. You're not alone, and

whatever decision you make will be right for you and your family.

One thing that may help with your decision: google "adults with

plagiocephaly" . You'll get lots of results, but one in particular was

helpful to me. http://forums. craniology. org has stories from

countless adults wishing they could correct their plagio. It was a

much easier decision after reading their thoughts, because I put my

son in their shoes.

Good luck!

From what I've been told, the younger the start the better. Most places will start banding at around 4 months . The fastest rate of growth is generally between 3 and 6 months. After that, the growth slows and since time in a band is determined by growth, the process takes longer the later the start. Check out the files sectionin this group. There are growth charts there that show the avg rate of head growth from birth to 36 months old if you're curious.
