Guest guest
My daughter has brachy (flat across the back) and has been in a STAR band for five months. While I (and many others) think her head looks much better (of course she has grown some hair so that helps), the measurements are not much better from when we started. I did not realize this until about a month ago. I really like our ortho guy so I have trusted his as he has reassured me that we are heading in the right direction. Then a month ago I asked for a copy of her measurements and did the math. Her brachy ratio was 97% when we started (I didn't know it was that severe) and is now only down to 96%. Again, many of us think her head looks much better so I really don't want to continue the helmet or get a second one just to make the numbers work. Any thoughts? I am torn. Thanks! Guest guest
did she have asymmetry too? If not what has changed in 5 mo? My daughter wore a starband for 5 mo and went from 97 to about 85%. She was younger, graduating at 10 mo old. Even with that correction I sometimes still wish she had more. She has some funny angles still - although I'm probably the only one who notices. If the number is 96, I would continue - but I would recommend a new band at this point. Our specialist was a cranio facial plastic surgeon, and he likes to see his patients get to 90% if possible. I would also probably look for another ortho, since in 5 mo you should really have gotten more correction. do you have pics of her head now, or a starscan print out you can share? -christine sydney 2.5 yrs starband grad > > My daughter has brachy (flat across the back) and has been in a STAR > band for five months. Guest guest
Measurements and numbers are such a catch 22. I always say it's more important to go by what the head looks like than what the numbers say but numbers can sometimes be so hard to ignore. It sounds like you've SEEN improvement, which is the most important thing. At the same time, I'm thrown by the fact that the ratio has only improved by 1% in 4 months. Are you sure the numbers are right? Regardless, I would say if you're happy with how her head looks, then be done with it. I agree that you shouldn't go for a second one based only on the making the numbers better. If you're looking for others to weigh in, we'd be happy to look at photos if you'd like to post them.
