Why do these helmets cost so much. Did anyone have this explained to

them? $3000 seems ridiculous. But of course a parent isn't going to

say no to something that will help their child's physical well being.

Anything medical costs a fortune, doesn't it? I am amazed at what

doctors charge for a 5 minute office visit. What I try to focus on

with the bands is that they are a custom-made orthotic device (not

sure what other people pay for " grownup " orthotics like leg and back

braces, etc., but I bet it's a lot) and the price includes everything

involved with treatment: casting/scanning, carving/replicating of the

head mold (and a corrected head mold at CT), production of the helmet

(which is time consuming and precise), subsequent scans and

measurements (StarBand), 2 photo studies (at CT), and every office

visit for adjustments (for some it's every week). If you break that

all down into what you would be charged for each of those

individually, I think it would be well within the 3000 dollar range,

maybe even closer to 4000 (office visits would be well over 1000 alone

easily). It just hurts a little more because it is in one big chunk

and is often not covered by insurance.

that includes treatment though so what I did was calculate out what it probablyw as per visit and it didnt seem so bad. I mean an initial visit with a specialist runs on average $250 here and I would say both casting visits constitute that as they were quite lengthy so that is $500 right there, I would say maybe $175 for the fitting b/c it is a 2 part appt so 675 and then maybe $100 per adjustment and my son had 6 so up to $1275 which brings the cost of his band (we paid ibn full and paid before the price increase) down to $1425 which is about average for many different types of prosthetics since they are custom made by specialists.
