Guest guest
My daughter Elaine got her helmet yesterday and it was not the best experience. She hates it with a passion. Trying it on and off while it was being shaped she threw fits. She screamed so long and hard she was all worked up. Enough that she vomited really bad twice. (She has a history of severe reflux w/choking and such) I haven't seen her barf out her nose and then panic from it in over a month. Once we were home and everything was calm I put it on again and then distracted her with food. It worked for maybe 15 minutes before she started with the " get it off get it off get it off. " Today is her 'day one' and her first hour of wearing it went alright. There was complaining but not as bad as yesterday. Her second hour will be when I get him from work. All I've heard is how the kids don't mind the bands and helmets and it's more of an inconvenience than anything else. Anyone else have such a difficult time getting their child acclimated in the first couple weeks? It's horrible to see her so upset. Guest guest
I am not farmilar with that brand of helmet and would consider going back to the orthotist for an adjustment if she is so visibly upset while wearing it. The bands are mostly passive and should not be causing the child pain or severe discomfort. I would look into this further and keep trying little by little but if she is in pain and vomiting I would not have her wear it without consulting the ortho. Guest guest
My son HATED the helmet for weeks. He did not sleep well at all. It was all I could do to not take it off. After 3 weeks things calmed down. He was 9 months when we stared. Good Luck!!!! Helmet hate My daughter Elaine got her helmet yesterday and it was not the best experience. Guest guest
It's not that she's in pain to the point of vomiting or anything like that. The only way the helmet and her reflux are related is because she was so mad over waring the helmet she worked herself up into a tizzy. That's what brought about the choking episodes. The severe reflux is something she's been in treatment for pretty much since she's been born. She used to have these horrible choking episodes multiple times a day. It's so much better now though. I haven't seen her go through such an episode in over a month. I also haven't seen her that mad for that long either. As far as pain goes, after the first hour of wearing it, there were no angry red spots. I really think it's a matter of her not liking this thing on her head, and not that it's hurting her. Especially since she wasn't throwing the same fit this morning. We'll be going back every two and a half weeks for a check up (after the first one week follow up) pretty much from here on out it sounds like anyway. If there are 'angry red' spots that emerge we'll call before hand, but I think we'll keep our questions until her first week check up. As for the helmet itself, it's listed here on the plagiocephaly info site. Their website is here if anyone is interested. It's what we were told to get at the time. We didn't have a choice presented to us and I hadn't looked into different kinds of bands and helmets yet. I didn't know they existed honestly. I'll be asking why this version when we go back to see the surgeon at the end of the month pretty much out of my own curiosity. I'm also a bit concerned on how the helmet will effect her recovery from the surgery she'll be getting in December. Guest guest
That is good to hear! Well it isn't, but it is. At least it's good to know there's a light at the end of the tunnel even if it takes a couple weeks to get there. Any tips other than to hang in there? I've tried distracting with food when we put it on and it seems to lessen the griping. Guest guest
I would dance with him on my hip. It's a good workout and fun for the baby. Also, the baby DVDs were good. I would sit him in my lap and put the helmet on while he was watching Baby Einstein DVD. Helmet hate My daughter Elaine got her helmet yesterday and it was not the best experience.
