Difficulty with Helmet in infant car seat?

I was wondering if anyone else has an issue with the helmet pushing

your child's head foreward and cutting off the airway when they are in

the rear facing car seat?

The ortho keeps telling me it's no big deal, just to leave it off of

him in the car. I think he's full of it.

My daughter went from the infant carrier type to a convertible/rear

facing seat just a few days before getting her band. She was pretty

comfortable. You might want to try that if you're using the infant

carrier now.

My son was older so he was already forward facing with full neck

strength/control so it hasn't bothered him. I have heard of at least

one other ortho recommending not wearing it in the car for that

reason, that it pushes the head forward and is unsafe (some mom posted

about it a few months back). But it doesn't sound like that's what

your ortho is saying, it sounds like he's just saying to leave it off

to passify your concern, is that you're feeling? How thick is the foam

lining of the helmet? I'm sorry I don't have more knowledge on this

circumstance, I would just say overall, I haven't heard of it being a

big problem, so I don't think it's normal that it should be pushing

his head that far forward. I hope someone else can chime in with a

similar experience.

Yes we had this issue with my sons head flopping forward in the infant Graco car seat. We switched to the Britax roundabout and wow what a difference. It is amazing, the first day he was leaning back and comfortable like a normal baby again. I would get out of the crappy infant carry and snap in graco things. I will never use that again. The roundabout is for birth to 40 pounds. I found the graco to have very little padding as well. The roundabout is so comfy. Good luck and get a new car seat tomorrow. It will be a world of difference. I was recommended the Britax by other mothers on this board. Top saftey rated and best comfort. Tammy

My son is in a Graco Safeseat infant carseat and still fits just fine.

My suggestion to you would be to try rolling a washcloth or even a thin burp cloth and position it under your baby's neck just to help keep the neck straight. as long as his back is flat and the carseat straps are tight, this shouldn't affect the safety of the seat. I also use a mirror on the headrest. Car seat technicians say that this is unsafe, but under the circumstances, I feel that I need to be able to watch him in the car.

BTW- when my baby falls asleep it looks like his head falls more forward but it has not been a problem.

I agree with Tammy about getting a Roundabout if you do decide to go

with a new carseat. It is definitely worth the money. The only

reason we keep our son in the " bucket " style is because the canopy

provides him some relief from the sun.

We also had to switch seats when our daughter was banded a few weeks ago, moving from the infant carrier to a Britax Boulevard - if you're ablte to take teh Britax plunge, the Boulevard is worth every penny. It has "wings" for the child's head to rest. We travel by car a lot to visit family and my son had the original version of this (the Wizard) - when the baby sleeps (or toddler), he/she can just rest his/her head on these. It's soooo nice. The wings move up and down in unison with the straps as the baby grows. We got it at Babies R Us. no - we didn't have this issue - but my dd was larger so we needed a new seat at that time anyway - We got the Cosco Alpha-Omega. It was rear facing for over 20lbs. ANd forward for up to 80lbs.
