rash on the neck?

Hi,

My daughter has been in a hanger band for almost 2 months and we've

seen pretty good correction so far (was a 9mm assymmetry btwn ears

and it's now 5mm; her cephalic index went from 89% to 83%). She's

had a few pesky red spots from time and time and we've gone for

adjustments that have fixed the problem each time.

But about a week ago my daughter had what looked like a possible

scratch or mild rash (it was very light pink and very faint) at the

base of her head. We happened to have an appt the next day anyway,

so I left it off overnight and then showed it to the ortho the next

day. It has almost totally healed at that point, so it was hard to

tell if it was irriation from the helmet or if she had somehow

scratched herself in that spot. In any event, we both agreed that no

adjustment was made to that spot b/c the helmet does not sit tightly

in that area. Everything was fine for another two days (no pinkness

or irritation that I noticed) and then all of the sudden there was a

HUGE red rash with broken skin blisters in the same spot. It was

over labor day weekend so there was not much we could to but leave

the helmet off and use neosporin. By this past tuesday it was totally

healed and we put the helmet back on and checked a lot to see if we

needed to make an appointment; but each day the spot was just fine

and not irritated. So we assumed whatever it was was gone. Sadly

last night at bath time I checked the spot and it's red and

inflamed. so, the helmet is off again until we can get an

appointment with the ortho on monday or tuesday. Of course i wish

now that we had gone in last week...

My question is: do kids develop these rashes (allergy??) in

localized places this far into wearing the helmet? I don't think it's

a fit issue -- we've been through those and this just looks/acts

different. I'm also thinking I should make an appt with our

pediatrician in case it's like a fungus or something else and the

helmet is just irritating it furhter, rather than causing it???

sorry for the length of this post!

thanks!

I haven't really heard of this. Have you used anything unusual to

clean the band? I would probably clean it really really well with

alcohol and leave it in the mid day sun hoping to kill anything that

might be there. It seems odd that it would be this spot if it is an

allergy, and not rubbing there. THat is why I wonder if there is

something on the band that is irritating her skin.

I think seeing the ped is also a good idea, but the only problem with

that is that they may not be able to tell what it is either. My

daughter had a rash on her leg last year and we went to the ped and 3

visits to the dermatologist without really figuring out exactly what

it was (luckily it cleared up).

Let us know what you find out.

Our son had a rash come up on his head after a few weeks in his

band. Ask your Ortho to put the Shear Ban in the band where it is

rubbing. This was am immediate fix for our son.
