Have You Heard About Low Dose Naltrexone {LDN}Today's newsletter is longer than usual because it is important.Dr. n Whitaker made a comment in his March 2007 newsletterthat reflects poorly on the way medicine is practiced today. Hewas discussing 'Old Therapies, New Uses' when he writes, 'Mostdisappointing, safe and effective therapies continue to be ignored.'Dr. Whitaker goes on to discuss Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), a drugthat first came to the market in 1984. It was initially intended for the treatment of heroin addiction, and it was not as effectiveas hoped. Dr. Bernard Bihari recognized that in very low doses thisdrug seemed to help his HIV and AIDS patients. There appeared to bea connection between low doses and an improved immune reaction.Dr. Bihari gave LDN to people with lymphoma, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel disease, arthritis, and otherconditions said to be autoimmune diseases. Many of them exper-ienced improvement of their symptoms. It is even reported thattumors shrank.I became involved with Dr. Bihari late in the 1990s and we began compounding LDN in numerous low strengths (ranging from 0.5mgto 5mg). Working together with other compounders we discovered the best methods for making LDN capsules and we even found ways to make a stable liquid formula (it tastes bad, but it still seems effective). To quote Dr. Whitaker, 'Today...LDN is making inroads. It's notbecause a drug company is advertising it on TV or paying for research. Its patent ran out long ago, so there is no financial incentive. Nor are many doctors prescribing it, since no drug reps are spoon-feeding them info on it. But LDNs popularity has steadily grown, driven by word of mouth from the many patients whom it's helped.'One of our local doctors called me the other day to tell me thatone of his patients called to tell him that he was walking and againworkiing 10 hour-days, and that his bladder weakness has reversed, after only taking LDN for a month.LDN is not a miracle for everyone. It does seem to help a lot of people. It is very inexpensive, compared to most prescription drugs, but you have to get it from a compounding pharmacist. Many of ourcustomers have been gettiing LDN for a long time - and they stillcontinue to reorder regularly. People rarely continue to use some-thing they don' believe is helping them. That's one criteria I useto determne if something is useful. Here's a link to LDN infomation on our websitehttp://www.thecompounder.com/msnaltrexone.phpThere have been two national conferences about LDN. There are linksto the information froom those meeting on our website or you canvist directly with the following two linkshttp://www.thecompounder.com/msldnconference.php (yes, that's Larry)http://www.thecompounder.com/msldnconference2.phpAnother LDN meeting is planned for October, 2007 at VenderbiltUniversity in Nashville.I think LDN is safe and worth investigating by anyone who suffers froma chronic condition that effects the immune system. That includes MS, Parkinson's, Cancer, AIDS, IBS, arthritis, and so on. For under $30 a month it sure seems worth trying.Dr. Ayre in Burr Ridge, IL (630-321-9010),Dr. Berkson in Las Cruces, NM (505-524-3720), and the Whitaker Wellness Institute in Potomac WV (800 488 1500) are medical reference resources for LDN.Dr. Whitaker's newsletter is a valuable source of helath information.Visit his website at http://www.drwhitaker.com/ and considersubscribing. It comes by mail and the issues are worth saving. If your doctor wants to talk to us about LDN tell him or her to call The Compounder at 630-859-0333 and ask to talk to a pharmacist- or use email to info@...
