Guest guest
Hello! I'm new to this group and my son, Landon, currently has a DOC band. We started at 7 months. I'm not the best with the measurements but from what I understand, his asymmetry was 15mm at start and is now 10 mm (he's now 10 months). We've been told that he probably has 2 adjustments left (4 weeks). Our clinician basically said - we've seen good results and we could exit or he may benefit from a second band. If we proceed quickly he'll be 11 months at the time the second band arrives. I'm trying to find info on results at this age. My pediatrician says we've done what we can, and the growth will slow so much after 12 months that the 2nd band is a waste of time. We saw good growth when we started, but I've seen his growth slow and now see little change from appointment to appointment. Thoughts? Guest guest
A lot of people start after one year and still see good results, so if you're not satisfied with his head shape I would keep going. Our cranio facial plastic surgeon recommends banding at 10mm or above, so from the perspective it would be borderline, but I know some parents band at 7 or 8 and are glad they did. It really depends how he looks to you, but I think you will see further improvement. -christine sydney 2.5 yrs starband grad > > Hello! Guest guest
Hi Tina- My son received his first DOCBand at 17 months old and we saw considerable improvement in 4 months of wear. We went for a second band and we have seen additional improvement in the 7 weeks he's worn it (probably not as much as in the first 7 weeks of the first band, but still enough to notice). It has been slow and it's not perfect, but definitely worth every minute he's worn it. Just to give you some idea regarding measurements (though I try not to focus too much on them), his cranial vault asym went from 15mm to 11mm, and his traditional cranial vault asym went from 19mm to 10mm in his first band. He won't be measured again until he graduates, but, like I said, I believe the numbers should reflect further change. So you know where this is leading. I think if you are not completely satisfied with his head shape, and a second band is a viable option for you financially, I would go for it. The only benefit of getting the band will be more correction to his head shape. The only negative of not getting the band is questioning whether you should have done it later on, when it might be too late. Ultimately the decision is up to you, but if you're wavering on the fence, I would choose to go for the second one. Good luck with your decision. I know it's a tough one.
