I do not believe you were being stubborn or overprotective at all!! SIDS is a real risk that many unfortunate parents have experienced. It is the recommended way for them to safely sleep. I aggressively repositioned my son from early on and it never made the slightest difference in his brachy. I have seen and heard that it does work for many but... not for Gavin. I have rearranged his room. I quit using swings or bouncers and limited time in the carseat. He has slept with his head a different way every time he layed down since infancy and nothing changed. His head never improved. My son still refuses to sleep any other way than on his back ( with his head turned). I always used a Angel care movement monitor in his crib for peace of mind. It is a motion sensor that sounds a alarm if their

movement or breathing slows to much. Please do not feel guilty for this. It is what is and just do what you can to correct it! I felt a little guilt myself for not getting my son in one before he was 1 but my sons doctors and 2 specialist insisted that it would round out by itself and that helmets were not helpful. I brought it up and sought 2nd opinions for many, many months. I knew he needed help just nor how to get it for him. I feel now that knowing what I know now, that I and many others were just not informed on the subject. I think the doctors should be more informed as they are guiding us on our childrens health and we trust them. My sons Physical therapist is who finally backed my decision on the helmet and called my ped to speak to her about it. As soon as someone other than me suggested it she jumped right on board . I called the orthotist my pt's company suggested and they did not believe that

I would see results after 12 months at all so I looked around myself for another and came across starband. My ped wrote another scan script and it all began. He was scanned and in a helmet 2 weeks later and I was seeing results within 1 week! He just went back for the 3rd time today and the orthotist was very pleased and sees signifigant improvement after 19 days in the Starband. I do not think it is uncomfortable at all for him. He plays with it when it is off and tries to put it back on. He has never complained about the helmet at all and has quit sweating in it alot after about 2 weeks and his body adjusted to it. It even protects his head as bonks around lol. I got the icemelt pattern and it is super cute, very modern. He looks absolutely adorable in it and I now know that I have done what I can for him. I believe that i will be very happy with the end results as I am happy with the improvement already. His head is

not just flat in the back now, his head juts from his neck now as it should and is popping out on top as well. I love it! starband is used up to 18 months with good results and my orthotist has a 2 year old that he has got Fda approval to fit and is seeing good progress in him as well. So yours is not to old at all. My son will wear it for 3 months, longer if we want more time in it and it still fits but he believes we will be happy after 3 months. My physical therapist office is waiting to see the results because who they refer out to does not project good results for THEIR band after 12 months and if they are happy they are going to refer out older kids to starband for better results. Their head growth slows at 12 months but does not stop. Trust your instincts and do not feel bad, get his helmet, correct his head and he will never remember any of this. I got used to it after about a week of going out and about. I was aware of it at

first and then you forget about it really. Some people look and ask questions and that is good I think. Many more people are aware just because they asked. I think as my orthotis said that it is harder on us than it is on them. I think it was a great decision to band him and I know that it was the right thing to do. I wish you all good luck.

Hi everyone, I am new here, my son Zachary is 9 months old now. I was happy to find this group. I had another group "the Dodgers list" that helped me heal my daschund of her back problems without surgery so I am a firm believer in web groups. When he was 2 months old my dr. told us he favored his left side and wouldn't hardly look to the right. She also noted that his ears were asymetrical. So we worked with him on turning his head to the right-and that got better. At his 4 month checkup my husband spoke with the dr because he had a flat spot on the side of his head that had gotten worse. My husband said it was because I wouldn't let Zachary sleep on his stomach at night- and so from then on I began putting him on his tummy to sleep at night-even though I hated it.We got his head measured at 4 months and one of the measurements was 11 mm. We were told that he had severe plagiocephaly

and we could get the helmet now or wait. We decided to wait and see if it would correct itself. So now here we are 5 months later and we have an appointment on Wednesday to get the scan again. It has gotten much better-much better- however if you look at the side you can still see the "flat spot". My dr. made the comment at his 9 month checkup that if we were gonna do the helmet she wished we would have done it sooner. I guess I am just looking for encouragement- because I thought I was doing the right thing by "back to sleep" but I feel that I have caused something that could have been prevented if I wouldn't have been so stubborn and overprotective. What are the chances that his head will be corrected with him being 9 months (probably 10 by the time we get the helmet)- can anyone tell me how long their little (possibly around his age) one was in a starband. I am sad and anxious because

I have read the posts and of course surfed the web and saw all kinds of stories.-and I am reminded quite often that this was all caused by me- not directly- but I can read between the lines. Thank you for listening.

Hi There,

My son is 9.5 months old and we have had the Starband for 4 weeks now. I can already see an improvement, but we have a long way to go. I was concerned that he was too old and would not benefit from the helmet but so far so good.

I blame myself too. It's in our nature as mothers but don't be too hard on yourself. At least you are doing something about it now. I think the biggest problem we had was the adjusting to the helmet. The first two weeks were horrible. I almost gave up after no sleep night after night.

Luckily it got better. That's why I love this group. Without it I would have ditched the helmet. Now we are in a better place and it almost feels like it's always been there. I'm telling you this because even though it was difficult I know we did the right thing. I kept telling myself, when my son is 13 and self conscience about his body, I want to know I did every thing in my power to help his head look "normal."

Good luck with your appointment.

Noah, 9.5 months old, Starband helmet 4 weeks.

Thanks , I appreciate the support on the Back to Sleep! It

has been a tough decision but we think it is best to go ahead so he

will get his starband on August 6th. He will be 10 months by the

time he gets it but we are just glad we are gonna do it.

Hi ,

Thanks for your input. I was concerned that we had " missed the

window " for best improvement but we do what we can right? He will

get his starband on August 6th. I am trying to make it fun, telling

hubby we are gonna make it look like a football helmet- we saw a

little boy that his mom did that with stickers yesterday- it was so

cute!!!!

Take care!
