Guest guest
First, I'd like to thank those who responded to my previous message (Impossible Decision). We've decided to go ahead with treatment, and we have the prescription. Though it seems that Cranial Tech is, without question, a good option, but the more I think realistically about this, the more obvious it becomes that I can not make the 5 hour round trip every other week. So I am looking at options in the Boston area. It seems the two companies are NOPCO and Hanger. Can anyone comment on the benefits/drawbacks of either of these. I am particularly interested in the scanning/fitting aspect. In addition to the flat spot, the overall head shape is quite asymmetrical, and I want to make sure the best process is used to take all of this into account. If it makes a difference, my son is 9.5 months old. Thanks, Larry
Guest guest
I decided not to go with hanger because they did not think my almost 12 month old would see much correction at his age wich is why we went with Starband. Also, they told us the back of the helmet was open for brachy and i did not understand that at all as I would have to still keep my son off of his back. Ours is a full helmet with a void in the back for brachy. I do not know much about either except what i was told from the orthotis at hanger. Good luck. i know it is a hard decision. i think alot of it comes down to the orthotist not the helmet really. Guest guest
Hi Larry, We went with Hanger primarily because the orthotist came highly recommended. I think the key to successful treatment is a combination of the rate at which your child's head is growing, a well-fitted helmet and the amount of experience your ortho has. Our daughter is 9 months old and has been in her Hanger helmet for 3 weeks. We decided go with the helmet because her ears are misaligned. Her facial assymmetry was 9 mm and 7 mm (there was a 9 mm difference from ear to mouth and 7 mm difference from eyes to ears on each side. Hope that makes sense). After 3 short weeks she is now 5 mm and 2 mm -- which we are very pleased about. Her cephalic index (width to depth ratio) was 86.2% and is now 85%. The goal is under 80%. So, we have been pleased with Hanger. Our ortho has been fitting kids in helmets for 10+ years and he has accommodated all of our requests for same-day appointments due to red spots the first week. That pleased us very much because we were stressed about the helmet a lot that first week. Hope that helped a bit! e (Mom to Ava - 3 wks in hanger helmet)
