Here is my opinion... I wouldn't clean the band with anything other

than alcohol even if it is a little stinky. The band makers (CT,

Othomerica, Hanger) all recommend using only alcohol and no water. I

know some orthos recommend their own thing, but I would go with the

manufacturer. Also baking soda seems pretty mild, but then again I

have never bathed with it or heard of using it on a childs head. It

can be pretty abrasive (I have used it to scrub pots and pans and my

bathtub). Also from my experience it can leave a residue, and you

don't want a residue in the band that can irritate your child's head.

My initial thought was it was okay to use it on his head, but I

probably wouldn't use it on the band itself. I've taken baths with

baking soda before as a kid and an adult (it helps to take the sting

out of sunburn), so I don't believe it's harmful to the skin. I just

wonder about the residue it might leave behind in the band if it's

not scrubbed out really well. And using water on the foam isn't

recommended because although the surface of the foam may feel dry,

it may not dry completely all the way through the foam and will trap

moisture against the skin, possibly causing breakdown.

It does sound like a great solution though, so I would just

recommend asking your ortho about it before continuing to use it

(although it worries me when orthos say it's okay to use water to

clean the band since the manufacturers specify not to). Again, even

if it can only be used on his head (I know people use a similar

paste with Aveeno oatmeal bath to help with itching and dry skin, so

it seems similar), it's still better than nothing. Please let us

know what the ortho says.
