Guest guest
I did not explain it very well-sorry. So the ridge is an inch above the bottom of his helmet, it is parallel to his hairline . The ridge is raised but you can't see it that well because of his hair. You can feel it and it feels very strange. I don't think the helmet is riding up. I check it all the time and he never has red spots. I worry his head will be change into an even worse shape- Is that possible? We have an appointment Friday So I'll ask about it and let you know.Anyone else have this happen? Re: Ridge on my son's head and inch upI'm having a hard time visualizing what you're talking about. Do you mean the ridge is dented in? And is it below his flat spot or part of it? Is it from the bottom of the helmet digging into his head? (Which shouldn't happen). Maybe if you post a photo it would help us see exactly what you're talking about. I can tell you this much, my son has not developed a ridge, so I'm not sure if one would be considered normal or not. The bottom of his flat spot has rounded out, but there's no ridge. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you do ask about it at the next adjustment, please let us know what the ortho says. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi , My son Nicolas has a Starband for almost 4 months now and he too has this ridge. His head is flat on the back left side and along the middle of the flatspot there is a bump, I guess or ridge, and its a horizontal bump that seems to be growing a lot. His head is also rounding out around the flatspot as well. I was also concerned about this making his shape worse or staying this way. My ortho said that its how his head is growing to fill out to take the shape of the helmet. I hope that helps! It is a strange way for a head to grow, I think it looks like he has a knot on the back of his head but its a good growth! -Alix Mom of Nicolas 7 months (almost 4 m starband) >> Hello, My son has been in the Starband for almost three weeks now. Guest guest
Hi, Something similar happened to my son. He had a ridge straight across the back of his head toward the right side. It was there for two check up sessions and I didn't think anything off it. Eventually, I touched the inside of the helmet and there was actually a ridge in side there in that exact spot. Dumb me! Make sure there isn't one in there, just in case. If so, have the orthotist shave it out asap and don't let him wear it until you go back. My son STILL has the ridge and it won't go away. His hair covers it, but its really irritating. I should have been doing my job and missed a big opportunity on his head. I don't know how it got there, and I know it wasn't there when we got it. I think the pressure makes spots appear in the helmet depending on what your child has. By the way, Dylan has brachy. And, he was in a star helmet. Also, he does have a ridge at the top of his head that isn't too noticible. This one is from the cutout at the top of his head. The orthotist cuts and shaves out a little from there and he has added back in depending on what he thinks will help mold it better. Sorry this is so long. Good luck! Guest guest
thank you . We have seen a bit of improvement-not much. My son is 9months old and is already a big guy,I'm not sure how much more he will grow. His flat spot extends into his neck, he had no definition. Now the ridge has formed so it looks better on that side because his head isn't the same as his neck. Unfortunately, the ridge goes across to the other side where his head is normal. ????? I have no idea if the CIRS, Palo Alto (California) is good. It was recommended by my son's pediatrician and all the before and after pictures seemed awesome. Re: Ridge on my son's head and inch upOk, a raised bump is better than a dent I would think. One more clarification though, is it part of the flat area at all, or is completely separate? If it's part of the flat spot or even at the very base of it, I think it's fine. My son is a lot older and the improvements to his flat spot have been isolated in one area at a time, so that I've been able to feel every little bump/difference that has popped out (as opposed to it all rounding out at the same time). So I would think it's possible that if it is part of your son's flat spot, it should hopefully just be a good sign that one part of it is starting to pop out, as it should. If it's completely unrelated to the flat spot though, I'm not sure a ridge is a good thing. I do know of babies getting fluid build that can cause ridges but they're not usually in the location that you are describing. I have heard of them most often above or near the ears. For instance, my son has fluid buildup above his ear in the shape of the space between the opening of the band. I was told by our therapist that it can also occur up around the caps of the DOCBand, but not sure how that would translate to other kinds of bands. Fluid buildup is not a problem though, it usually goes away within a few weeks of graduation. To answer your one question, yes it is possible that a helmet can make the head shape worse, if it is not used properly by an experienced ortho. Have you seen overall improvement to his head shape in the 3 weeks he's had it? Does it seem to fit properly (just snug enough)? I would definitely ask about it at your next appointment. I really hope it's not a problem. Please let us know what the ortho says. Guest guest
thanks Kim. I did look on the inside. It seems to be smooth to me. If I lived closer to the CIRS location I would be there every other day making sure it's fitting right. I have to go one faith...... Guest guest
It sounds strange, but you start noticing things about other peoples heads as well as your own. We've noticed that my husband has a flat on the same side as our daughter. Well I got to rubbing my own head. I also have a ridge at the base of my head and in the center is a bump. I can feel it but you can't see it. I remember when I was little my Mom would ask the doctor about it. As far back as I can remember it hasn't gotten better or worse and it doesn't hurt. I wouldn't worry about it. You can't see it even with my hair up and I have thin hair. I hope this makes you feel better.
