Guest guest
Ok, a raised bump is better than a dent I would think. One more clarification though, is it part of the flat area at all, or is completely separate? If it's part of the flat spot or even at the very base of it, I think it's fine. My son is a lot older and the improvements to his flat spot have been isolated in one area at a time, so that I've been able to feel every little bump/difference that has popped out (as opposed to it all rounding out at the same time). So I would think it's possible that if it is part of your son's flat spot, it should hopefully just be a good sign that one part of it is starting to pop out, as it should. If it's completely unrelated to the flat spot though, I'm not sure a ridge is a good thing. I do know of babies getting fluid build that can cause ridges but they're not usually in the location that you are describing. I have heard of them most often above or near the ears. For instance, my son has fluid buildup above his ear in the shape of the space between the opening of the band. I was told by our therapist that it can also occur up around the caps of the DOCBand, but not sure how that would translate to other kinds of bands. Fluid buildup is not a problem though, it usually goes away within a few weeks of graduation. To answer your one question, yes it is possible that a helmet can make the head shape worse, if it is not used properly by an experienced ortho. Have you seen overall improvement to his head shape in the 3 weeks he's had it? Does it seem to fit properly (just snug enough)? I would definitely ask about it at your next appointment. I really hope it's not a problem. Please let us know what the ortho says.
