I am so sorry! What city are you in? If you are close to a Cranial Technologies, I would suggest going for a free evaluation. They will provide a photo study and measurements you can give to both your neuro and ped. Perhaps the numbers and photos would convince them to provide the referral. If not, I would ask Cranial Tech (or whatever clinic you are close to - Star, Hanger, etc) for a list of a few pediatricians in your area who have made previous referrals - and then I would SWITCH!You are doing the right thing by being a strong advocate for your child. It sounds as though you have a couple of "old school" doctors who believe the head will round itself out on its own. I believe this may have been true twenty years ago when babies slept on

their tummies most of the time, but I sadly hear case after case of parents who were told it would remedy itself - and then it didn't. My 6 1/2 month son has very bad flat head on his back and also has

some flatness on his right side. We noticed it when he was 2 months

old. Our pediatrician asked me to do aggressive repositioning . At

that time, I was completely ignorant of this flat head problem and

could not do aggressive repositioning. But I made sure he was not on

his back in the day time. My baby started sleeping through the nights

from his second month itself and this increased his flat head a lot.

At his 4th month check up, the pediatrician referred him to a neuro

surgeon. The neuro surgeon asked us to reposition the baby's head and

see if it changes anything . We have been repositioning him at night

times too. I have been making him sleep on his left side .

Now he is 61/2 months old and we don't see any significant change in

his head shape. He has severe flat head on the back and some flatness

on the right. So we asked the neuro surgeon to give prescription for a

helmet hoping that we will get our baby start on helmet ASAP and he

would have a nice round head in 3-4 months. To our surprise, the neuro

surgeon is not ready to put the baby on helmet. Moreover he says by

the time the baby goes to school, the flat head would be unnoticeable.

contacted my pediatrician hoping she will understand and give

prescription for helmet. But she said she would not do that and asked

me to contact the neuro surgeon again to see he if he will agree this

Hi Sandy Thanks for understanding. My pediatrician has a good name. That is why I have second thoughts about changing her. But I am so desperate to get a helmet for my son . I don't want to get it delayed because of what the doctors believe in. I am going to talk with the neuro surgeon again tomorrow.We live in Irvine, california. And I think there is a cranial tech in San Deigo which is abt 2 hrs drive for us. One thing we are really concerned about is since the time my baby got diagnosed with flat head, we dont dare to put him on the floor . As soon as I put him on the floor, he is lying on his flat head . So through out the day I try to hold him as much as possible. I think thats why my baby is neither rolling over ( he does once in a while), nor crawling . Do any of you guys know a pediatrician who has prescribed

I live in San Diego and my son just graduated from CT there. We go to (CPMG) children's primary care medical group the Encinitas location. It is a little over halfway from where you are in relation to San Diego. If you want to switch your pied to CPMG I don't recommend going to the mission valley / main office, It is a bigger office and I think the Encinitas staff is much better. Our Pied is Dr. Neglia 760-436-4511. He has sent many to CT and even sent my prescription in based on a phone call after I told him that repositioning was not working for us. I think you should trust your instincts and switch maybe go to CPMG until you find a better fit in Irvine. Do what ever takes to get that baby banded. We also had a great experience at CT San Diego and had an almost 100% correction. We

Thanks for the reply. I also heard there is a cranial tech office in Pasadena, CA. I will also call them and find out any info. The first thing I do tomorrow morning is try calling the neuro surgeon. If he is adamant on his decision, then I have to switch my ped because my ped said her office never gave any helmet prescriptions. So I better look for a Dr who can help us out. I hope I can get my baby banded by the end of this month. I would look into seeing a pediatric craniofacial surgeon as well.

We went to a neurosurgeon who said no band was necessary when my son

was 4 months old and ended up letting a year go by before pushing

for the script again. When he was 16 months old, I went to another

ped for a second opinion and a cranio surgeon and they both wrote me

scripts. Cranio surgeons seem to be more band friendly than neuros.
