No visible improvement after 2 months of treatment

My twin boys have been wearing their DOC Bands for 2 months now.

Every time we went for our appointment, the orthotist showed us where

their heads made improvement. But it's so subtle that I can't really

tell. Their facial asymmetry which was what I was most concerned

about was still there. We just went to see our pediatrician last

Friday for our 1 year old check up. Our pediatrician also told us

that she saw no improvement.

The first time we went for our consultation at CT. One of the

orthotists there told us that Isaac's plagio is so mild that it should

be corrected within 2 months. It's been 2 months already. There is

just no visible improvement. I was told that the DOC Band's life is

only 4 months. I am afraid that our $5000 is going down the drain.

My husband would be infuriated if he is to be advised of the need to

get 2nd bands for them. I am just getting very anxious about the

whole thing.

Is it normal not to see any improvement for 2 months?

Hi -

Is there really absolutely no improvement at all? That is really

hard to believe. My son was much older than your boys and we still

saw a spot pop out in the first week. Have they grown a lot in the

last 2 months, in size and head circumference? If they aren't

growing as fast and the plagio was mild to begin with, it's possible

that it would be hard to see drastic improvement. If the plagio is

too mild, the band doesn't really have anything to hold on to in

order to apply the appropriate holding pressure. But CT is usually

good at letting you know that up front if that was the case. How

much foam is left in the band? Has the therapist said how much

longer they plan to be in them?

,We too are at CT and we're on week 9 of the DocBand. While I can see some rounding in the back of my daughter's head, the facial asymmetry is definitely still there. According to the ortho, we only have 2.5 weeks left in this band, but I'm concerned we're not going to see the correction we hoped for. In some ways I alsmost feel like the band is making it worse, as it seems to push her face (on the cheekbone) to one side.I know this is of no help, but I wanted you to know you're not the only one feeling anxious after two months.Kindly,Sandymom to Lyla - 8 months - 9 weeks in DocBandand Owen 4 No visible improvement after 2 months of treatment

Even if they were premies - at 12.8 months there would not be as much of a growth spurt as a 4 or 5 month old. Our son was 6 and 1/2 months old when he was casted, and started 2 weeks later and really didn't have much growth spurt in the four months that he was in his DOC band, though we DID see improvement in huge way... it just took more time.I know it's hard.... but this process does take some time. I know it's hard seeing so many 6-8 weeks "we graduated" stories when there doesn't seem to be much changing in your own experience... so patience is important because even in this process every baby is different. Keep photos if necessary, but I'm betting you are getting correction that your eyes don't readily see since you are accustomed to seeing them.mom to Quinn born 11/99, DOCband Grad for scaphocephalic (long/narrow) head shape 10/00.>------- Original Message ------->From : juliapianony[mailto:juliapianony@...]>Sent : 8/7/2008 8:51:10 PM>To : Plagiocephaly >Cc : >Subject : RE: No visible improvement after 2 months of treatment>>My twin boys have been wearing their DOC Bands for 2 months now. The facial assymetry is the last to correct if it corrects at all. The way it was explained to us at NJ CT was the back first, then the sides near the ears and lastly the forehead. Lucky for us we had nice improvements all along and started early at 4 months. Good luck and if you are not satisfied ask to speak to the office manager or head ortho. You are not here to make friends at the CT office. Be firm and state your concerns and have them documented. We made sure we switched orthos after we were assigned to one only with the company 6 months. We wanted the most senior ortho and we got it! Speak up and keep the faith. You will get there but it may take another ortho or another band. Tammy

Thank you all for your advice, encouragement and sharing of your

stories. I think for the last 2 months, my boys did not really grow

that much. Every other week we went to CT for adjustment, the

orthotist measured their head circumference. (I think our orthotist

is the senior orthotist in NJ CT.) Every time the orthotist told us

that there was 1mm growth. That seems very little to me. The

orthotist would bring out the moldings of their heads and hold them

next to their heads to compare and check on the progress they've made.

She showed me that the back of their heads where it was flat is

rounding out. If there is no molding, there is really no way to keep

track. Even with the moldings, I can hardly see the differences she

pointed out to me.

It seems that most people get very visible improvement after 1 month

of treatment. I'm just wondering if there is anything wrong here.

Our orthotist told us that it's because that they had very mild plagio

to begin with, that's why we are not seeing much correction. I

thought that if it's mild, shouldn't it get corrected faster?

Besides, their brachy was very severe. I don't see too much

improvement on that, either. Maybe it's because that their heads

didn't grow that much for 2 months?

Since I was so concerned about not seeing much improvement, I asked

every time that whether we'll need a 2nd band. Our orthotist always

told us that we should not need 2nd bands because they are so mild.

That was one of the important reasons that we started the treatment.

If we were told that we'll need 2 bands for them to correct their mild

plagio and that's going to cost us $10000, we would not have done it.

I asked how long would the treatment take. Our orthotist told us

that it's usually about 4 months.

Right now, half of the foam inside the helmet is still untouched. The

other half is shaved down to less than 1/2 of the original thickness,

some parts are about 1/3 of the original thickness.
