Guest guest Posted June 24, 2008 Report Share Posted June 24, 2008 Alright so today I took Maysa (5m 1w) to Orthoamerica for an evaluation visit. They took a scan of her and I posted her picture on the M folder, pic 91. Wow, well if I had some doubt that she would benefit from a helmet, they are now exhausted! Check it out. According to their measurements which are close to those of Mindy's son Sawyer, she has a severe case of Brachy with a cephalic index of 97.9% (CT said 92%) and a mild to moderate case of plagio at 6.4mm (CT said 7mm). My baby IS getting a helmet. Even my husband is starting to oblige. My visit with Orthoamerica was more pleasant than that of CT. I also like looking at her 3D picture on the computer. She also showed me the progress that another patient with similar characteristics as that of my daughter made. He went down from 99% to 90%. She said that the parents were happy enough to stop the treatment. I saw the little boy on his way out. His head looked great to me! This said, this place is an hour away from home and the ride is kind of hectic. I have another appt with ECA tomorrow and another on Thursday with Hanger. By Friday, my decision will be made as to which helmet she will be getting. I also want to mention that Orthoamerica is offering the helmet for $2720 instead of $3600. It makes a difference, especially when I am pretty sure my insurance won't pay for it. Just thought I'd keep you updated. I'm not sure if the price has anything to do with the severity of the case but you might be able to negotiate it down. Guest guest Posted June 25, 2008 Report Share Posted June 25, 2008 Hi Leila- Glad to hear your eval went well, and even happier to hear that your husband is getting on board. And I get you on that DC traffic. We used to live in Bowie MD and to go to Virginia was an ordeal. I would gladly take my 3 hour trip to Charlotte for adjustments over that traffic. But if, after your other evals, you're most comfortable with Orthomerica, you'll find a way to make it work. I would suggest calling your insurance company directly and asking them (if you haven't already) about their coverage for the helmet and whether you have in-network or out-of-network coverage for any of your 4 banding options. I called my insurance company 3 times to hear it from 3 different people what the coverage was. Don't trust what the insurance specialists at the ortho offices tell you, because they can be wrong. Ask about Durable Medical Equipment, that's usually what it is listed under and my policy specifically spelled out in its brochure that it included a dynamic orthotic cranial device. For me, the StarBand was in network and the DOCBand was out of network, but I still had coverage for both (90% vs 75%). Please keep us posted on your other evals.
