Discouraged!

Hello all,

I am having a difficult time believing in the helmet these days (at

least for my son Nolan). I know that it has worked really well for

others, but I am having a difficult time seeing how it is helping my

son. Just feeling a wee bit discouraged these days.

We are now into week 6 of him wearing the helmet and I have seen

very little improvement. Nolan is 11 months old and is a very

active boy (not crawling or walking yet, but he does try to scoot

around and moves from laying to sitting and sitting to laying all

while using his head to balance himself and push himself up while

doing it. The helmet seems to shift when he does this. He has a

chin strap attatched with velcro to help keep it on, but now he has

figured out how to undo the velcro and pull his helmet off. We have

been challenged with the proper fit even when putting it on his

head, as he moves so much and tries to dodge the helmet screaming in

the process. I wonder too if It just seems to shift on his head

because of his head shape. I feel lost as to what to do. Our Ortho

said that if after 7 weeks we don't have a noticable difference,

then perhaps the helmet isn't doing what it's supposed to. We are

at week 6 and well ... week 7 is around the corner!

I have made an appointment for Thursday ( 2 days from now) to have

some additional adjustments (perhaps the strap snapped on) and I

will discuss it with our Ortho at that time.

Is there anyone else out there who has had similar difficulties?

Could anyone give me some direction from their experience or

expertees. I am really thinking this whole thing is a lost cause

for my son!

I'm sorry it's been so frustrating for you. What type of helmet is it? Where are you located? I have been a member of the group for over a year and the only time I have ever heard of someone not getting improvement is when the helmet is to blame, meaning the helmet is not fitted properly or such. Every one that I remember has gotten a different helmet and seen improvement. Actually that was one of the reviews we got when I looked into our local helmet place that there was someone on here whose child didnt improve, actually got slightly worse even when using the local helmet so they switched to cranial tech and got great results. Between that and the interview we had with the local place I had no confidence in them at all so I stuck with CT and there were periods where growth was slow and I wasn't sure anything was happening but then when I saw his headsicle at his visits I knew he was getting results just maybe not where I wanted them. In the end though he did get results where I wanted them that was just th every last area to change right before he graduated so it was very hard to go through that b/c you worry it wont work. Having never heard of a child not getting results with CT though I think that helped me feel a little more comfotrable that it would get there, that and the headsicle.

What kind of helmet is he in? I have never heard of 1 with a chin strap/ Different ones work at different speeds. I know typically kids wear the star and hanger bands longer so I am guessing maybe they work a tad slower than the docband? There are also passive helmets that take considerably longer to work, I think I read they need to wear those for like 6 months on average so the difference you would see would be very subtle in only 6 wks, especially at his age

Nolan is in a custom made helmet, not one of the brand name ones. I live in Canada, and the province I live in there is only one option of places to go. I have felt very confident in the Ortho's experience and proffessionalism. He has had lots of experience from what I understand.

Anyways, Nolan was 10 months old when he started wearing the helmet and the estimate was that he would have to wear it till he was 18 months old. Being an older baby, he has to wear it longer. The chin strap is velcroed onto the sides of the helmet. Hopefully we can get some more permanent attatchment like snaps or something. Shari

I would say if they anticipated him wearing it for 8 months that the difference would be more subtle since he has only been wearing it 6 wks so I wouldnt worry too much, especially if his head hasnt grown much in that time.

Hi Shari! Sorry you are having a hard time with the band and Nolan! :-(

Please frogive me if you have already sadi all of this - I have been MIA for a bit and am now jumping back into answering posts.

What type of band do you have?

What has the ortho offered as help? Has he tried to fix the slipping?

What were the starting measurements/pics and what are they now?

Have you looked into going to another band provider to get a 2nd opinion?
