I think it is very important to practice Back to Sleep. My son who

always slept on his back never moved at night did not delevop this

problem. For I feel the problem had to do with not getting

enough tummy time. My husband got injured a week after she was born

and then had surgery when she was 6weeks old. With my son it was

just him and I at home for those first months and I was strict about

tummy time etc. Poor came into the world and then we had all

this turmiol and while she got lots of attention espciallly from

Daddy who held her tons we just did not get on the floor with her

very much and I feel guilty about that and that we were guilty of

using the swing maybe a bit too much. That being said, I know I can't

hop in a time machine and fix it so I feel that I am now doing what

needs to be done to help prevent any problems that could spring up in

her future. Also, I knew nothing about this and thought the flat

spot would work itself out. I mentioned the whole thing to our Pedi

as an afterthought at her 4mos visit and then hemmed and hawed over

if I should even bother about making the appt for the scan.

So now I look at myself as an advocate and educator with this. I

have friends having babies and have told them to keep an eye those

babies heads and ask their peds to take a look every visit. In this

day and age no matter how good your Dr's are or how much you like

them you must advocate for your own healthcare and as parents that of

your kids. We have a ped who is consistanly listed as one of the top

docs in the state and even he didn't catch it.

So please don't feel guilty. There are no perfect moms. We all ae

just doing our best in this world and the Back To Sleep campaign is a

wonderful campaign. As I say to my friends I would rather have put

" Back to Sleep " and have her have to wear the helmet all over

again then what the horrible alternative could be. Of course, now

that she can roll over she is a total side to almost stomach sleeper

anyway and moves all around but I still put her on her back to start.

Just wanted to share that my son did not get his helmet until he was 9.5 months old. He had severe brachy and plagio. His starting cephalic index was 108% and he had 10mm of asymmetry. His cephalic index at his 14 week visit was down to 89% and he has 0mm asymmetry (he reached 0mm at his 9 week visit). Also, at his 14 week visit, I thought (hoped) we would be graduating, but my orthotist said that even though he was a little over 12 months old, he still is having significant growth at each visit. She said as long as he is producing good numbers, we might as well leave it on another 3 weeks and reevaluate then. I am telling you all this to give you hope that it is not too late. I was very skeptical at first and thought that my son was

too old, but he has had significant improvement.

Hi Kathy,

In regards to being an advocate- I have a friend that her baby is 2

months old- and I have already told her to please watch out for

tort, and flat spots. This is not something that is brought up very

often at the Dr.'s- or if it is it will " work itself out " so those

who are going through or have gone through this experience should

share the information that these condtions are very serious and

needs to be monitored!
