I had the same ped experience, as did many parents on this board. You are doing the right thing. Explore your options ad follow your gut. We have a Starband and the resluts have been great so far. My son has been in his Starband for almost 5 weeks. He is 6 months one week old. He had 18mm assemetry and has right sided plagio with tort. You need to get your baby in PT. Demand a refferral. The helmet won't correct the Tort. PT corrects the TORT. Remember, this is YOUR baby! Remember,

the squeaky wheel is always heard! Call you HMO and tell them they are refusing to send you to PT or go to another DR. My DR thought PT was a waste of time and now my sons Tort is rersolved. Of course, you need to do the exercises at home too! Good luck,,,the decison is very comsuming!

Going to a specialist without a referral

Hi everybody,I am brand new to this group and the reason I joined is because I feel that my little 5 months old daughter needs a helmet to correct her Plagiocephaly. We've noticed it when she was about 1 and 1/2 month old and also noticed that her head was titled and constantly turned to the right. At her 2 months old visit, the doctor gave us some neck streching exercises to do at home and told us to reposition her to her left side when she slept. She also said that her head would round up eventually. At her 4 months old visit, another doctor just says the same thing, not to worry that it will round up. In the meantime, although her head shape has changed since the first time we've noticed it, it is not round at all and her head still tilts slightly to the right, never to the left.I am tired of waiting and not really seeing any improvement. We were not even referred to a PT

to treat her torticollis even less a specialist in helmets. Therefore, I schedule my own.My first appointment is this Wednesday with Cranial Technologies in ndale. We are also checking Eastern Cranial Technologies in Falls Church next Wednesday. What worries me is that she doesn't qualify for helmet. I have a hard time measuring her from the nose to the left and right ear. There doesn't seem to be more than 5mm difference, yet, the right back side of her head is flat...Also, does the helmet correct the torticollis? Has anybody gone to both CT and ECA and preferred one over the other? Please help me figure out what to do before it's too late. Thanks,Leila

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. I will be calling my doctor's office tomorrow to get a referral to a PT. I can't believe that all this time has gone and none of the three doctors she saw cared to send her to one. Why do we have insurance???

Anyway, I can't wait to take her to Cranial Technologies tomorrow to see where she really stand and what they can do to help.

Good luck, we went to a few doctors with my son without a referal. I have the type of insurance where I do not need a script to visit a special doctor. I went to a ear nose and throat doctor on my own as well as selected other specialists. you need to be your own advocate. I found this out fast. I would make sure to go with you gut and if you want a specialist to take a look go for it and push for it. Tammy
