Guest guest
Wow, sounds like he is doing great. My daughter wore a starband and went from around 97% to 86% but it took 5 months. How old is your son? Sydney started at 5 mo. She did make progress at every visit (every 2 or 3 wks) but it took a long time to be " done " . Thanks for the update. =christine sydney 2.5 yrs starband grad > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > I have been reading the archives and have read nothing but bad > > > things > > > > > about NOPCO in Boston Children's Hospital. Guest guest
Hi - Thanks so much for the update on NOPCO! I'm glad to hear of 's great progress. Please keep us updated with his final results and also be sure to post before and after photos to also benefit future NOPCO parents. Good luck the rest of the way! Guest guest
Thanks for all of the encouragement... is now 8mo1wk. He had the situation where I kept bringing it up to the ped and the ped kept brushing me off so he was late to get his helmet. I hope it doesn't take 5 months. was 10lb5 at birth and weighs nearly 27 pounds now so he can produce a mean head-butt! :-) > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > I have been reading the archives and have read nothing but bad > > > > things > > > > > > about NOPCO in Boston Children's Hospital. Guest guest
Thank you so much for posting these messages. We have an appointment at Children's on July 24th to determine if my 12 month old has plag (I've done the research online and am convinced of it) and in reading these posts, I was preparing myself to driving down to CT to Cranial Tech. With both my husband and I working full-time, I had no idea how or when we would be able to do this. I'm glad that there are options of places close by that are working for others. > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > I have been reading the archives and have read nothing but bad > > > things > > > > > about NOPCO in Boston Children's Hospital. Guest guest
I'm glad it helps make you feel better. I just know how disconcerting it was to read nothing but negatives when we started there... We had our initial appt with Dr and our initial fitting in the city at Children's. Follow ups have all been in Braintree and for the most part we're happy with that location as well. Very quick and easy with the fittings. We started our son at almost 7 months and he's now had his band for almost 2 months. Not sure how your experience will be different since your child is older. We still haven't had any lasting redness, ill-fitting, or issues with the helmet. We have only run into issues with the front office who can be flaky at times and return calls at a turtle's pace which is frustrating. We are in Hingham. Feel free to email me directly if you'd like to chat more! -- In Plagiocephaly , " kyafrate " <kyafrate@...> wrote: > > > Thank you so much for posting these messages. Guest guest
Thanks for the info! I'd also like to add a positive review of NOPCO. After reading some (old) things on here I was also nervous that NOPCO / the " Boston Band " would not get results and be much worse than the DOC Bans from CT but my daughter saw results right away (after 2-3 weeks)from her NOPCO band and has had no red spots or fit problems at all. She was 7.5 months old when she started it and had moderate Plagio (about 15mm difference)which she developed from torticollis. After 2 months of wearing the helmet she looks GREAT and is almost ready to be done! We're going another 3 weeks since it's not bothering her at all and then we'll see what we think. Her helmet is also really cute with purple butterflies on it - not that should really matter, but it helps. (There is 1 photo of her in helmet posted under Hayley). We are north of Boston and saw Dr. Greene at Children's in Boston but then at the Peabody location (which was much easier to get in/out from)and have been going to NOPCO in Burlington, MA. We have UnitedHealthcare and had to pay out of pocket and the whole thing cost us $2,000 which is also cheaper than some other options. In our case we did not need to drive any further, pay anymore to see great correction rather quickly. Good luck to all in the Boston area. > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > I have been reading the archives and have read nothing but > bad > > > > things > > > > > > about NOPCO in Boston Children's Hospital. Guest guest
Hi , Im just curious what your daughters measurement is currently. My daughter (also hailey) wore the band for about 9 weeks and has "graduated" but her measurement was eyeballed at 4mm from about 18mm. Now i am questioning whether or not we should have stopped. thanks! Guest guest
I think it is possible to have periods of little or no growth while in the band. My son had some great correction the first five weeks in his band but then his growth slowed down and it took 9 weeks to go from 7 mm down to 6.1 mm. Then we hit another growth spurt and dropped down to 4.6 mm. Our ortho didn’t take before and after pictures either but they were using a STARscanner so we had scan results from each visit. What type of band does NOPCO use? Is it their own band? It is def. much better than it was! But I still see some flatness. I think what bothers me is that Nopco said for 5 weeks that there was " no change " and they had her measurements start at 24mm and down to 12 mm. but she supposedly stayed at 12 for 5 weeks. When we went for our followup with dr rogers he said she was about a 4 down from about 18. I trust him more than I trust Nopcos measurements.. but i dont understand why they would be so different from start to finish. The same day Dr rogers said she was at about 4mm Nopco said she was at 12mm. then when i said that there is no way she has not grown in 5 weeks.. they said yeah i dont think the measurements are accurate. I asked for another scan so we could compare.. but they wouldnt do it. Overall my experience with Nopco was okay. They were great at fittings and seeing us when I felt the helmet wasnt fitting right.. but Im not crazy about their method of measureing. Also they dont take before and after picts. Guest guest
Nopco uses a Boston Band. Very close to picts I have seen of the StarBand. Even the same patterns. I guess I am just a little uncomfortable with the measurements from Nopco being so different from the Specialist. And a little uncomfortable with the fact that the specialist just eyeballed it. But he said that if we had brought her to him at this point he would not have advised us to get her a helmet. And he "gives our helmets like their candy" I just wish that they would do a scan and compare the first to now. Oh well. Do people ever get 100% correction? Guest guest
Hi there- I'm glad you're getting some good information and experiences about NOPCO. I just wanted to mention that I would suggest asking them how many older babies they treat with the Boston Band. I'm not sure what the recommended age limit is for that band specifically, so check on that first. But I would also ask them how many babies 1 year and older they treat per year. My son was 17 months old when he started band treatment. I had a local StarBand option about 40 minutes away (I'm in NC) but chose to drive 3 hours to Cranial Tech because the StarBand ortho had only seen a handful of babies over the age of one, while CT sees about 40-60 a year (if I remember correctly, it was definitely way more). They also band to 24 months of age. So I felt more confident going with the band that had more success and experience with older babies. (12 months is not as old as my son was, but it is getting up there). Good luck!
