Glad to hear you are in your starband and have started the process. I am unsure as to medicaid but I am sure others will be able to advise you. I know your son will see some correction and wish you the best in this process. Good luck Tammy

Hello, my son has just started in his Starband at exactly 1 year old. We are not sure yet wether Mediacid will cover it or not. I am in florida and and his head is 2 1/2 outside the variance of normal and he has bracheocephaly. I am unsure of the mm or how that works. If anyone knows wether Florida Medicaid covers it or not that would be very helpful! I have been trying to get him banded for 6 months and the doctors never measured his head they just would touch it and assure me that his hair would cover it.They do not like the banding. He is behind a little developementaly, he is just trying to pull himself up now and has no interest in crawling. He is very active and bright, he just is a very content baby. He has had Mri's of his head and full spine and they have been fine. He has enlarged ventricles but hydracephalus has been ruled out. I finally got the helmet because the OT and Pt supported me

and the ped finally helped out with it all. The orthotist thinks that he will wear it only 3 months and I am not clear on why as a older child is supposed to wear it longer I had thought. has anyone had any experience in banding a 1 year old child and what were the outcomes? How long did they need to wear their helmet? I had heard of craniosynostosis and assume that at his age that would not be a problem now.he is still a total back sleeper and has had specialist and his ped look at hime few times. So it has been ruled positional. I have looked everywhere at the info and am sure that the headshapes are much more obvious and he has no facial assymetry. i just would not want to hurt him in any way. I am always very nervous about the anesthisia and do not want to do test for little reason. What testing is done and do they have to be sedated? I do not have any reason to believe he has this I am just a

little nervous about all of this still and am trying to get used to him in his helmet. He looks so cute :-)Thanks for any feedback and have a great day everyone!!

Hi! I'm also in Florida. What area are you from? I live in the ville area. My daughter Marlee was banded at 9mo and has been in her starband for almost 2mo now. I to was told by my pedi that my daughters head would "round out". That didn't happen so I got a refferal to have her head scanned and she measured severe for brachy. It made me so mad that for months I was asking my pedi about her head shape and was never taken seriously. I was told that Marlee would only wear the band for 3mo as well. I think the starband can be worn up to 6mo as long as it still fits and has foam that can be removed.

Good luck! I hope someone can help you with the insurance info:)

I am in St.Augustine but our pedi is in jacksonville and we are going to Bremer Brace in Jax for the starband. Maybe we are at the same place lol. I am glad they are finally doing something about it. It makes me upset as well to know that I was never taken seriously about his head. All they would have needed to do was actually measure his head to know and i could not get anyone to ever do it. It took alot of pushing to get this far but I really think this will make a difference. Are you happy with the progress in 2 months and do you think she will be in only the 3 months? It just seems like such little time to see much correction, I was surprised at the length as I though it would be much longer. Keeping my fingers crossed :-) I will definately speak up about him wearing until I am satisfied. good luck and thanks. ,mom to Gavin and Evan. Does the urge to mess with the helmet pass? I am

constantly making sure it is on correctly or not putting to much pressure lol. It has only been on since the 3rd and he is doing great. I think I am having a harder time than he is!!

Yes that urge passes! I had the same urge too, probably more so

because the therapist told me NOT to mess with it. But you get used

to the way it looks on them and you stop fussing with it eventually.

My son started wearing his DOCBand at 17 months old and his head has

changed for the better (still a long way to go to perfect) so I

think starting at 1 year old will see good results.

Good luck!

I do go to Bremer Brace! lol! Larry and are great. Marlee was just in today for an adjustment. I haven't seen any other babies in the area with a helmet so be prepared for lots of questions from strangers. I definitely can tell a difference in her head shape already. She has brachy so she's mostly flat in the back. It seems like there is a ridge of new bone growth coming in the middle of her flat spot but the top still seems flat. I'm hoping in the next month the top will fill in. Over all her head shape already looks much much better. I'm hoping that she'll only need one band:)

I am glad someone else is familiar with my orthotist !! I am glad you are seeing good progress. Marlees head shape sounds like Gavins as well. He has brachy and it is flatter on the top portion. and Larry are great too. I like them alot and they have no problem answering my questions. Have you had just the 1 starscan or additional ones? I have only seen 1 baby with a helmet in my area.We do get alot of looks but no one has said anything but a neighbor yet and she thought it was to protect his head. You can see people trying not to look but they can not really help it. I did not know what they were before this really, so I understand. My 4 year old thinks he looks like a football player, very cute.

I was just in St. Augustine on vacation with my banded baby. And I could not

believe the

stares we got. We live in Kansas City and we've gotten some looks and a lot of

people will

ask us questions. But when we entered Florida, it was like a whole other

country. It made

me feel self-conscious all over again (she's been wearing the band for 13 weeks

so it's not

like it's new to us w/looks and comments). So I feel for all the banded moms in

Florida.

Good luck and great correction to all babies heads.

We are in the Kansas City area too. my daughter wore her band in 2002 though. Are you going to the KU facility? When my daughter was banded there was a facility in Independence.

Very cool to talk to someone else that's going to the same ortho! I thought I was the only one. Marlee has only been scanned once. They never measure her head at our adjustments either. I've been taking pics every 2 weeks so I can compare the before and after pics. I'm not sure if they get another scan at the end of treatment but I'm going to ask at our next appt. What design did you get on his helmet? We picked the girly pink camo and it came out really cute. Wishing Gavin great head correction!!

I think it is pretty cool to. It is nice to have a comparison and a good recommendation too. I took alot of picts as well from like every angle. That is a good idea to take them that often, I think I will do the same. My husband swears he can see his head rounding out already lol. I think they get another at the end but I kinda want to know the measurements in between all that. I liked the pink camo it was very cute. I think his is called melting ice? It is bright blue, light blue and white all swirled together. It really is very cute. I am glad they give you a option though. Has marlee had any red spots on the back of her head? Gavin did today after he woke up and I called but they are out today. It was in the exact area where it needs to be corrected in the back so now I am a little nervous of the fit. The spot went away but I am fairly

sure that there should be no pressure there at all even in his sleep. Hopefully they will get him in tom. Are they good about seeing you quickly? I will have to put up a pict sometime, do you have any on here?

I posted some pics of Marlee under the "Our Plagio babies M" they are on the last page. She had long hair I had to cut when she got her band. That has been the most traumatic part so far. Marlee has had a couple red spots right under her ear on her neck but that is a holding area. They smoothed the foam out a little and shes been fine ever since. I would definitely be concerned to if there was a red spot where there should be a void in the helmet for his head to grow. That's strange. I haven't had many problems with the helmet so I've never had to just call and bring her in. I hope they can see Gavin soon! I would love to see some of your pics:)

She is absolutely overly cute cute cute with or without the hair and seems happy too! My daughter got her helmet last Wednesday. She doesn't have any red spots but whenever she lays on her back and starts moving a little, it comes down to rest on the ridge of her nose. Needless to say that it needs to be adjusted. I will be seeing the ortho tomorrow. Hopefully things will be taken care of soon. I've had to take it off longer than recommended because it would leave a crease on her nose when laying in her carseat.

Awww she sure is cute!! I am sure it was hard to cut her hair but she is absolutely adorable either way. I really like the helmet to. I will get some picts on the digi and put them in this week. I am thinking that the it will fit fine with just a minor adjustment and I am watching it carefully. I made sure he slept on the opposite side tonight.

Thanks Leila! Maysa is beyond adorable too! Yes please post some pics of her in her new helmet. I'm curious to see what the ECA helmet looks like:) I hope you can get everything straightened out with the fit....I don't understand why it would move forward. Does it cover her eyes and land on her nose?? I'm having a hard time picturing what your describing.

Did you ever get in to the ortho today? Is Gavin's helmet still giving him red spots?

No, he slept in it last night and woke u spot free. larry said that the red spots can change daily and that sometimes they get a spot from sleeping in a diff position. We go friday so he felt it could wait since it was not there again.I swear when we took it off this morning his head looks more uniform in the back. we asked if we were just wistful thinking and said no that some people see results very quickly!!! I am pretty excited though! thanks for asking. We had him out and about all day today and no one said anything, I was very surprised. Lots of looks, you can see they are curious about it. What do you say when they ask? Just curious.

Yay! I'm glad he's spot free. I usually tell people that she has a mis-shapen head and we're trying to round it out. A lot of people think she has a head injury or that we're about to go for a bike ride. lol! The little kids usually ask the most questions:)

Well we had our first checkup today and it went great! They only made some minor adjustments to it to ease his red spot and give him a little more room behind his pinched ears :-) He had a slight rash and it cleared up completely. So all is well and I am finally relaxing about it hurting him. He is doing wonderful and does not mind it a bit. Also thanks for the link about the icepack in the carseat, I think I will try it!! I have had some people ask about it now and I tell them and they are very curious about it. the kids love it everywhere we go, it is so cute really. One lady said her daughter has a very flat spot and they assured her that it would pop. She was 8 months and i explained that I was told the same and that it never did and gave her the info to this site.. She is going to have a second opinion as well. I do think it is a

great idea to get the word out because it would benefit so many of us and others. I am glad I found this wonderful site because it really does help me cope and understand all of this. I found my digi and will post some picts this weekend. have a great weekend everyone.
