Hi jsydney. My plagio baby is almost 5 years old now but when she

was a baby I did correct her plagio with repositioning only. She was

my 3rd child, btw, and just like you my older kids had no plagio

issueas at all. I never had her evaluated by a specialist but I

believe that she had mild/moderate classic plagio. She didn't seem

to have additional width (although I could be wrong) but she did have

a significant flat spot on the back left side of her head. She had

no tort, and tort can be a real wrench in the works for repositioning

so it is good that you know what you are doing to stretch it out.

Your son is at such a GREAT age for you to be doing this. I am proud

of you for noticing and taking action so soon. he has so many good

growth spurts coming up and if you can keep the level of repo that

you are doing, you can repo right through the growth spurts and

actually see change daily. It's harder with older babies because

they are so mobile but young'ins like yours are perfect candidates

for repositioning. How severe do you think your son's plagio is?

You asked how long you should keep it up with repo'ing. My answer to

that is, " As long as you are seeing positive change. " I started

repo'ing my dd at about three and a half months and I decided to keep

at it until her 6mo well baby visit. I made an appt with a

specialist for around that time and I just started doing it. I

decided that if I wasn't happy with her progress at 6 months then I

would go ahead to the specialist and make further decisions from

there. Well, I never went to the specialist. I was taking pictures

of her head monthly (something you should do too, maybe bi weekly or

something) and as I looked at her progress, I thought, this is going

to well to stop now. And I am still, 4 years later, thrilled with

her results. Please look at her progress photos in the photo

section. Look int he repositioning folder, her name is S.

If you don't mind sharing, what kinds of things are you doing to

reposition your son?

Hi Becky - thank you so much for your response - it gives me hope!

I checked out your DD's pictures and it's pretty impressive. There's

no way I'd ever know that she ever had a flat spot if you didn't

have the pics to prove it!

As far as my repo with my DS - I start with the typical rolled up

towel, that didn't work so I tried using a wedge cushion under his

side - he wormed his way off of that, too. So I tried the wedge in

conjunction with the head support insert from his carseat - that

didn't really work, either (he's a REALLY squirmy baby AND I swaddle

him for naps and bed... don't know how he gets out of everything

but the swaddle!). I've also changed the end of the crib where I

place his head (I figure I'll keep him there till I start to see

some improvement and then I'll alternate ends). What I finally

ended up doing - and so far it seems to be working - is tracing

around his head on the wedge cushion (the skinny end is at his

shoulders and the fatter end at the head) and then " scooping " out

part of the cushion for his head to rest in it - it's slightly

smaller than the outline of his head, so it's redistributing the

pressure from the back right side of his head to front - he's still

turning his head to the right a tiny bit, but now there's empty

space under his head. Hopefully that made sense!

We're also doing everything else we can - bottle feeding him on the

opposite side, LOTS of tummy time, limited time in the carseat and

no time at all in the swing/bouncer. Hopefully this works! I'll

try to post a pic of him on the repo board for you to see (his name

is Luke and it's a 6wk pic) - let me know what you think if you have

the chance...

Thanks again!

Hi Jess. I just sent you an offlist email cautioning you to stop

using the swing/bouncy/etc and then I read this message and noticed

that you already do that. Sorry. :)

Qin Wang - thanks so much for sharing your story - hearing others'

experiences has really given me hope and has made me even more diligent

about the repositioning... and you're right! I just looked at the

pictures I took of my son's head last week and compared them to this

week and there's already a noticable difference! I can't believe it!

Thanks!
