Welcome -

I do not recall anyone going to UofM before, but hopefully if there

are, they will respond (I do remember one mom being from Michigan

and wanting to decorate the helmet like UofM football, but I don't

remember her having any concerns about the helmet or the brand so I

don't know if she got it at the same place or not). Does the helmet

you are getting have any type of brand name at all? There are other

ones on the market, like Hanger and Danmar. Do they make the helmet

right there at UofM, or do they send it away to some sort of

corporate headquarters to be made there? Is it plastic with a foam

liner (active) or just a plastic shell (passive)? It sounds like if

they have a scanner to take an image of the head, it could be a more

widely used brand name kind (definitely not DOC since those are only

available at a Cranial Tech location). Scanners are pretty expensive

(I'm assuming), so I don't think a small rinky-dink homemade band

provider would have that kind of technology, so hopefully that is a

good sign for you.

As far as the painting, I paint my son's helmet every 3 weeks. The

paint just peels off in big pieces and then you sort of have to pick

at smaller pieces around the edges. So it's not super permanent. You

just can't remove the stickers themselves once they've been stuck

and covered with mod podge. They'll peel off the paint with them,

and won't be reusable, so you'll have to start from scratch when you

feel like changing the design.

Good luck!

Thank you, the brand name is danmar & yes I believe it is active it was scanned and it is plastic with the foam liner. active I guess.. He showed me the mold of Chase's head. So it was definitly made for him..(it's not one of those small, med, large off the shelf things) I know that for sure, but it seems most people have the doc or starband..so I am worried that it wont work. although it seems to fit good and does'nt slide around or anything...I'm keeping my fingers crossed... As far as decorating it... you can peel off the stickers after the mod podge? I would just have to paint it over again? is that what you mean.. thanks again for your info...hopefully someone out there knows or has dealt with U of M... mom to 7 1/2 , Christian4 1/2 and Chase almost 7 months <nwilkens2275@...> wrote: Welcome -I do not recall anyone going to UofM before, but hopefully if there are, they will respond (I do remember one mom being from Michigan and wanting to decorate the helmet like UofM football, but I don't remember her having any concerns about the helmet or the brand so I don't know if she got it at the same place or not). I did once remove a sticker once it was mod podged and reused it (my original paint job was terrible and I had to redo it, but I couldn't get another sticker - it was a Detroit Tigers D for a baseball helmet), but I had to be very careful and I only had like 2 layers of mod podge on it. My son is 6 months. We have an appointment June 4th to get the scan for the helmet. We are going to SCOPe for a STARband. He has moderate left plagio. How old is your child and where did you go?

We also went to scope in Kearny Mesa...its the one next to Childrens Hospital on Front St. They only do childrens ortho. The lady that we are working with there is Ellie Boomer. She only does helmets. We are happy so far. Bryce got his band last Thurs and it has been an easy transition. He is 5 and a half months old, Mod to Severe Plagio with a slight Bracy. He aso has torticollis on the left side for which he goes to PT. Let me know if you have any questions. I am glad to finally meet someone from San Diego. I live in Chula Vista. What about you? What is you baby's story?

Re: Re: new.. helmet from u of m (michigan)

that is so weird that you did that detroit tiger theme.. I just ordered some decals off line that is the detroit logo set...it is made for the little baseball players that want to decorate their baseball/batters helmet for little league...in fact anyone out their that wants to do a basballl theme this website has every team available... Are you from Detroit?

your son is adorable...my oldest had red hair when he was little up until around 4 years old and then it started turning brown/blond. ..my little one has reddish hair.... I love it....Jake is so cute.....

thanks for the tips...

I think that as long as it's a custom made band from Danmar, and the ortho is experienced, you should be fine. It's the off the shelf Danmar helmets that I've heard horror stories about. Sorry if I confused you. I paint, then sticker, then mod podge. When I want to change it, I just peel the whole thing, stickers, paint and all, off in big pieces. I did once remove a sticker once it was mod podged and reused it (my original paint job was terrible and I had to redo it, but I couldn't get another sticker - it was a Detroit Tigers D for a baseball helmet), but I had to be very careful and I only had like 2 layers of mod podge on it. Not sure I would have been able to do it with more. But generally, once I'm ready to change it, I just scrap the whole paint job and start fresh with all new paint, stickers and mod podge. There are some pics of my son's paint jobs under Jake W. in the plagio/J folder.

I have a couple more designs I still need to add to it.Jake-20m (tort resolved/rt plagio/DOCBand 15 weeks)Jordan-4> >> > Hello, > > > > I just discovered this board.. My son was in a U Of m helmet for 5 months starting at 4 months. We were very dissatisfied with the results. I understand there is one OT at the facility who is excellent but we had a "trainee". Our second helmet was star band from Michigan Orthotics in Livonia which was a better experience. I believe we lost valuable time - prolonging the time our son spent in a helmet - over 1 year.
