Guest guest
I am so desperate. After much discussion we decided to pay out of pocket for a helmet for my 9th month old son. During the day it's ok while sitting up but anytime he lays down he get really upset and screams. Naps and night time have been HORRIBLE. It seems to get worse as the days go by. It's been a little over a week as of July 2nd. My husband and I are upset and we don't know what to do. We both work and we're not getting any sleep. I also feel like we waited too long and wont see any results. I'm wondering if anyone started the helmet after 8.5 months and did they see any results? Also, does it really get better? I can't take much more.... thanks
Guest guest
Im really sorry its not going so well for you guys.. i dont think he should be acting that way after 1week, zay screamed alot for maybe 2days.. i would def check with the doc, there is prolly somthing that needs to be adjusted!! and that can be done, call asap if you dint already!! my son Zayvier will be turning 1 next week and we are on week #6.. and when we went for his 3week check up for pic and measurements, we actually saw and measured a 3mm difference which is huge... we only have to grow 9mm more and we are done, if he grows 3mm every 3wks we can take of at the end of August! i guess it depends on if you child is growing at a fast or slow rate, to see results fast they need to be growing fast.. i have been feeding zayvier like food is going out of style!! well good luck and keep us posted!! > > I am so desperate. Guest guest
I am so sorry it is taking your son awhile to adjust to his band. Does it seem to fit okay? Is it leaving any redmarks that dont fade in an hour? Some babies do take a week or so to adjust to the band. My now 6 year old daughter wore a STARband from age 9 to 12 months with great results. She has before and afters under STArband and Jenna. Also we have many babies in the group that was banded older than a year with great results. Angie I feel like we made a mistake... Guest guest
Hi - I'm sorry to hear that things aren't off to a good start. What type of band do you have? Is it leaving any red marks or does it seems to be pressing on his head funny when is lying down? I would definitely call the ortho and ask about bringing it in for an adjustments. Most band providers have you come in for a 1 week check-up so perhaps you already have an appointment scheduled. Have you tried putting memory foam on the mattress? A lot of people have used that and it seems to make the bed more comfortable. We bought a twin-size piece of memory foam at Target (appx $40) and cut it down to fit the size of the mattress; I placed in underneath the waterproof mattress pad and sheet. That seemed to help my son sleep better in his band. Guest guest
Hi - our daughter received her starband at 6 mo and was 14 mm diag diff - she was out of the helmet at 14 mo and ended up at 3.5 mm off - the improvement was tremendous - 0-5 is considered normal - so she achieved complete correction! We still stretch and strengthen for the tort - keep that up (she is 19 mo now) **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Guest guest
So sorry to hear you are struggling. I would suggest calling the ortho and checking on the fit. What type of a band are you using? What area are you located? Perhaps with this info we can guide you better. Dont give up...... Many Many mothers have started at 9 months which is not too late at all to see excellect correction. Something is irritating him, it could be the foam on the band (try using a toothbrush to scrub it really well with 75% alcohol and let it dry infront of a fan). It could be your shampoo and the helmet combined. We were using s the lavender scented and had to switch due to irritation to a very mild unsented shampoo and body care line called California Baby super sensitive. It was a godsend and worked like a charm to stop redness and itching of my sons head. you can get it at Diapers.com. We use their shampoo and also the sunscree and body lotion all wonderful. Try to put some foam under the bed target 1 1/2 inch foam worked for us. we bought a queen size and cut enough to cover the crib and also the pack and play bottom. (under a pack and play sheet it works great for naps) Keep up your hard work but keep trying new things. you will get the answer but you need to keep the faith. Guest guest
Hi just to send a little encouragement... My son received his starband at 8 1/2 months and we have had it about a month. It doesn't bother him at all. We are seeing great results and started seeing results after the first week. So good luck and it will get better. I would do it over again in a heartbeat! Guest guest
I'm so sorry to hear of the trouble you're having. What kind of helmet is he wearing? Does it seem too big or ill-fitting at all? Is it pressing or pushing on his forehead or face when he lays down? If so, it really shouldn't. The helmet should fit well enough that it doesn't inhibit laying on his back or give him any pain or discomfort. If it's not that, it might just be that he will take a little longer than some babies to get used to wearing it. How long has he been in it for 23 hours a day? I would suggest trying some of the other ideas that other moms gave with regards to memory foam, shampoo, etc. Anything you can think of, I would try. Is he able to roll over in the helmet? If he normally sleeps on his belly, could he be having a hard time finding that comfortable position now that he has the helmet to contend with? Would it be worth trying to put him to sleep on his belly? I have always put my son to sleep on his back, but once he was big enough to roll and do his own thing, he ALWAYS sleeps on his belly, even with his helmet. He actually digs his head into the mattress with his knees bent under him and his butt up in the air. But it must work because he's never had a problem sleeping. Maybe he needs your help to find that comfortable position. I'm sorry I can't offer more help. I can tell you that 8.5 months is PLENTY early to start band treatment and I'm sure you will see results, it just might take some extra time to get him used to it. We didn't start the band until my son was 17 months old and it has still helped. I wish I could have banded him earlier. I know a mom personally that started at 9 months and her son was only in his band for 10 weeks before graduating with a perfectly round head. So I know it's tough, but try and stick with it. If you can get past this hurdle, the results will hopefully make the struggle that much more rewarding. Good luck. And please keep us posted. Guest guest
gosh, hang in there! my son also had a rough couple of nights but then we got the memory foam (and a couple more adjustments) and that did help us as well. please let us know how it goes the next couple of nights! plus, you have a long weekend ahead to work on the " kinks " in the helmet and sleep. > > > > I am so desperate. Guest guest
I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. I agree that you should call your Dr/Ortho, could be as minor as a trim and then your problems would be over and you could all get back to sleep filled nights And if you can spend the money, we've been impressed with the memory foam (after a week of letting it air out just in case!). Our Christian got his Starband at 8 1/2 months (3/08), though he's still in it at almost a year (July 4), we have certainly seen great improvement in his headshape! The measurements show it but even better, we can SEE it. Hope you get it sorted out soon! God bless you. Guest guest
We had a DOCband so ours may have been different from what you have. But my son seemed to adapt to it pretty fast. Have you contacted your tech? Had them look at it to make sure it is adjusted properly? Do you notice any red spots? Also, at nap and night time, it can hep to have a fan on in the room. Could he be too hot when he is trying to sleep? It will get better. The lack of sleep makes it seem even worse for all of you. Make sure that you have spoken with your tech and had them look at the helmet. If you still feel like something just isn't quite right, go with your gut, and have another tech look at it. Guest guest
It might not be the helmet. My son is 9.5 month old and has been out of the helmet since the beginning of June. At around the middle of the June he started learning so many new things, how crawl, how to walk with support, how to sit up from a laying down position, etc. He was a great sleeper up until that point. I have done some research and a lot of people say that baby don't sleep as well during these developmental spurts, they call it " sleep regression " . The 8-9 month regression is sopposed to be one of the worst. I guess it's hard for them to unwind, etc. I would put my son down to sleep and he sit up and start crying uncontrollably. It has gotten so much better as he's learning to master all these new skills. Anyway, hang in there, you will be able to determine the cause and it will get better for you > > I am so desperate. Guest guest
I just wanted to say: Hang in there ! I felt like reading my mind when reading your email... I know it's hard to go through all of that but it will be so worth it in the end. You will start seeing results after about 3, 4 weeks (depending on his growth). For the sleep at night, we are taking turn with my husband because we were just too exaushed after the first week, like you are now. When he's sleeping with our son, I would sleep in the guess room... and the next day it will be his turn... Also, we put him to sleep without the helmet & just after 5 mn when he's sleeping we put it on. It works better this way for him, no trouble falling asleep. His head looks so good now that we are happy to go through that even if it's hard on everybody. It's been 9 weeks now. His web page is in French but you can look at the pictures & it will give you hope: http://www.webartvision.com/Plagio He was 7 months when he started. Best of luck to you. Karine.
