(OT) MS and the Birth Control Pill

For the ladies out there, have any of you noticed that your MS

symptoms worsen during the week of your period while you are on the

birth control pill? I've noticed for awhile now that I seem to have

more symptoms, tingling and numbness when I'm taking the placebo

pills. Once I start on the other pills, my symptoms seem to improve.

I recall one time that my neuro had said that women who are pregnant

seem to do ok with their symptoms, and if I were to tie pregnancy to

the hormones that are in the pill, it seems there's a correlation.

Anyone have any info about whether estrogen-type chemicals have an

effect on MS symptoms?

For the men out there...don't try this at home!

Bobbi,

Yes being pregnant is a good thing for people with MS. I wish I could get that same effect without actually being pregnant! I already have 2 that I love but that's all I want.

Ah, Phew!

I guess it may be a language/word difference thing between the US and

here in the UK.

To us, 'placebo' means a non-active medicine or treatment, often used in

tests and trials (ie 'double-blind placebo controlled trial') to see if

the 'real' drug works as it should! Placebos are usually just

sugar-pills or similar.

The birth control pills here have either: 21 pills of one type of

hormone, with another 7 pills with a different hormone (thereby making

up the full 28-day cycle) - OR a pack with just 21 pills which you

take til theyve gone, and take a break of 7 days with nothing at all

(with period arriving at around day 3 or 4 of that bit).

Sorry to all the menfolk on here - and a bit off-topic we realise (Oops)

but we girls like to compare notes - just for the record, tee hee.

yes, the 7 days of 'different hormone'... the 'different hormone' is Glucose or Dextrose or Sucrose, aka Placebo. Inert. They put them there to help people continue to 'take one a day'
