My only guess is that he hasn't had a growth spurt recently. They do the best in the helmet when they are growing. Don't get discouraged because he has a lot of growing to do yet and I'm sure his head WILL get better. It really sucks to hear nothing at an appointment, so I do know what you're going through. My daughter Nikki is 11 months and will be in her helmet for a little while after her 1st birthday. : (. We'll get there though and she will have a perfect little head or at least reasonably close to it. Keep your head up and good luck!

So, had been in his STARband for seven weeks now and we have followed the rules to the letter. He has missed several days due to a really bad sore on his head and two fevers, but other than that, we have been extremely compliant. We went to the orthotist today and not only have his measurements not changed from the last visit a couple of weeks ago, but they show that both the flat and prominant spots have grown equally. I swear it looks like there has been progress, but the numbers two visits in a row don't support that. If you measure left front to right back and vice versa, and subtract to find the difference, it still shows 1cm difference. 10 whole stinkin mm!!!! I can't believe it. The child is nine months old. What are we going to do? The orthotist doesn't think there's anything wrong with the helmet or the fit, but that can't be. I don't know what to do, but has a well visit on

Monday am and any advice or suggestions anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.Thank you, * 9mo * tort resolved * lft plagio * STARband 7wksConner * 2yrsGreenville, NC USA

My son has been wearing his DOCBand for three weeks now. Today he went in for a minor adjustment. We were greeted by his therapist who was holding a model of his head created from the casting. I know there has been improvement but until I compared it against his head (now) I didn't realize how much. Since I've joined this group, I've read a lot about measurements. I was never given any with regard to my son, so I asked about that today. She told me that measurements are not necessarily indicative of progress because the measurements can be inaccurate from appointment to appointment, and that the head may grow in different areas thereby providing conflicting or disappointing numbers. She said the best way to determine progress is by comparing the model to his head (now)

I also learned that while his physical therapist (for torticollis) thinks her work is done because his range of motion is great, the therapist at CT disagreed. CT told me that I must continue his neck excercises from now until 18 months if I want to correct any asymmetries.

I'm so sorry - I know you must be very disappointed. :-(

Maybe he just hasn't had a growth spurt? Has his circumfrence grown?

What do YOU think of the fit... is it holding in places (his prominate forhead for example)

Go to a Cranial Tech, many mothers are unhappy with ill fitting Hanger bands. Read the past posts. Get out of that band...

There isn't any reason why she should " get out of that band " . With

an experienced Ortho a baby can see great results, sometimes it just

takes some time. Plus, remember too that the numbers don't always

tell the whole story AND they sometimes vary depending on how they

are being measured. If YOU think you see progress, then it's quite

likely that there has been some.

I agree with the others that maybe he hasn't had a growth spurt.

Though if the circumfrance grew, then maybe there is an issue.

Let us know what the Dr says.

Sam, wow! Nikki has made amazing progress! That's wonderful! I

hope you're right and little 's head will " shape up " soon! His

head has grown, but both sides have grown equally which is not good.

I'm thinking it has to be that the helmet doesn't fit right or

something. Thanks for the response and hopefully I'll have better

news next time. :)

I guess that what we really want is for his head to look less flat

and it does look better to me. So, I think what you said makes

sense. I'm just so...AR. I like numbers/data and objective stuff

like that. I might just have to get over that! I wish I could see a

model of 's head. I'll have to ask about that. :) Thanks,

I am! :( But, there's still time to fix it. His circumfrence has

changed-all his measurements have but the problem is that all parts

of his head have grown and that shouldn't be. The helmet has been

too tight, then too loose, too tight, too loose... I think they're

overcorrecting. I also think that because it took 2.5 to 3 weeks for

it to be made and get here his head had grown and it didn't fit right

to begin with. Errrr! :) heather

I totally know what you mean about the " headsicle " at CT. I was

actually surprised by how much worse my son's head was to start with

when I saw the mold! I was so focused on his flat spot, forehead

bulge and ear asym, that I didn't notice there were additional

slopes and slants to his skull in other areas. So the mold was very

interesting to see. And you are totally right about the numbers.

Measurements are very linier and 2dimensional and don't always take

into consideration the volume (3D) of the head, particularly in

areas that aren't measured (like the bottom back of the head).

I'm excited to see my son's second headsicle for his second band

next week, I think it will really be interesting to see the changes

from the beginning of treatment. And then the exit mold when he's

really done/graduated. I'm going to have 3 of these headsicles at

the end of this, not sure what I'll do with them, but they'll be fun

to keep for posterity!

Hey! I can't wait to see the ped on Monday. I'm not an especially

patient person when it comes to making decisions like this. It was

all I could do not to push the well visit up to today. But,

has a fever and they probably wouldn't vaccinate, so we'll have to

wait. I guess my issue (one of them) is that I don't truse the

ortho's knowledge/skills anymore. After he said that a STARband is a

passive device he lost me. It's probably fitted like a passive

device and that's probably why it's not working! I'll post as soon

as I can talk to the ped. :) Thanks!

I just got back to work from taking my son to his check-up. He has been in the band for 6wks today. The CT told me the same thing regarding measurements. She said they are not always indicative of the progress he has made. She also said the same about his PT for his tort...exercises till 18mos. , hang in there. I'm sure once has a growth spurt things will start to improve. I'll keep you and your little man in my prayers. Take care. If it has never fit right then Id get them to make you a new one. If you don;t get anywhere with your ortho then call Orthoamerica... I have heard of them remaking a band from a NEW scan for free because the band wasn;'t right.

Of course, this is if you are comfortable with your ortho and their experience.

Let us know what the ortho says.

I guess the question is: Was there a problem with the helmet as it

arrived, or is it a ortho problem? And unfortunately I think the

answer is, both. I do believe (the ortho does not) that the helmet

was late in arriving and 's head had grown. But, I think the

main problem is that the orthos didn't know it was supposed to be

active and shaved off too much trying to make it fit. There are two

places on the helmet now where you can see the plastic shell through

what used to be foam. I don't know for sure, but that can't be right.

Now, we'll have to see how far we can go in this process w/o

insulting our current orthos, since we're there until we can find

something else. That's assuming that our insurance will pay for us

to try again somewhere else. I've called a place in Chapel Hill, NC

and left a message for an ortho to call me back. So, we'll see!

Thanks!

How long did it take from the time your son got scanned/casted until he got

his band? You should be getting the band within two weeks. Any longer than

that and it probably won't fit correctly.

As a fairly new band it should not be shaved down to the shell. My son's

was shaved down to the shell when he was almost done with the band, that's

how we knew that he had outgrown it, there was nothing left to adjust.

In my opinion, I wouldn't even wear this band anymore. A poor fitting band

can really alter the shape of the head and make it worse. I would check

into your other banding options and go with a completely different company.

Perhaps you can even call Orthomerica, tell them about your experience and

see if they'll provide you with a new band through another more experienced

provider.

I think I'll do that. I'm not at home, so I can't check my calendar,

but they told us it would take ten days. It took somewhere between

two and three weeks. Hmmm. If two weeks is typical, then that may

not have been the problem. I need to check my records to see.

The longest it should be is two weeks to the day, so even if it was

15 days, that's one day too many. But for sure if it was between 2

and 3 weeks, he could easily have grown in that time and thrown off

the original fit of the band.

Also, I would not feel bad about going around your ortho to get some

answers from other StarBand providers. I do think it would be

tougher to go to CT at this point and then go back to your ortho and

say, CT said this. That's like comparing apples to oranges (in a

sense, I mean the bands should work the same, but of course CT has

more faith in their own product). At least if you're asking two

other StarBand orthos about it, it's more oranges to oranges and

your ortho will have to have some solid answers to your comeback

questions. (He won't be able to brush you off with " well that's a

DOCBand and this is not. " )

I feel nervous just thinking about it! Am I right in thinking that

STARbands were fashioned after DOCbands or did I create that in my

head? :) It could happen, i tried to put the foil away in the

fridge the other day. Mommy brain! Are DOC bands considered better

for older babies?

OMG, by the time you scrape out the foam and are down to the plastic

shell you've basically outgrown the band. There is no more room to

adjust the band, and you've gotten little to no correction. You need

a new band and a new ortho. I really wouldn't worry about insulting

him/her. You should get a refund for the band or have orthomerica

arrange for another ortho to do the banding at no cost. I would

raise a stink that your ortho is so badly trained. That is what

really bugs me about some bands - the orthos can be excellent, or

NOT. We were so lucky to go to a super experienced starband ortho,

it really makes a huge difference.

Good luck and please let us know what happens next.

Oh, I completely agree. It doesn't sound like the Orthotist is very

good. I would contact Orthomerica and see what they can do to get

you set up with a better Ortho and get a new band.

Good luck!

Jen :)

Not necessarily " better " per se, but they do have a longer protocol

for wear, up to 24 months, where as the StarBand is only to 18

months (but I believe that is to start treatment, i.e. they would

start treatment at 18 months at the latest, but the Brace Shop at

UNC said that because Jake was starting at 17 months old, he may

only wear it for a month and if we didn't see enough change, they

would probably recommend discontinuing use. At CT, I was guaranteed

that he would wear it for 4 months, and I really wanted to give him

the best chance possible from the beginning. I'm glad I did because

I've seen the most change in his forehead bossing in month 4 and may

have missed that correction if I went with the STARBand).

And because they have a longer protocol for wear, they therefore see

more older children overall. Plus the doctors are very band friendly

in Charlotte (so CT has told me) so maybe they refer more older

kids. Our surgeon at UNC told me he wouldn't band Jake because of

his age but when I broke down in tears he said he would write the

script and defer to the ortho, so chances are he typically doesn't

recommend many older babies to the Brace Shop at UNC, so that's why

I personally felt better going to CT.

So, is CT where they do DOCbands? I'm thinking that I'll first try

to see if Orthomerica will supply us a new helmet with a different

ortho (maybe in Chapel Hill) first. That would solve the money and

travel issues easier. If that helmet didn't work (can't imagine), we

would still have time for a DOC which I'm starting to think we should

have done in the first place. But, you live and learn. Hopefully we

can get this show on the road soon. Will I need a new perscription

for a new band? If not, I really don't need to talk to the ped, but

will since we're going on Mon. I'm seriously thanking God for this

group. You guys have all been so great. Thank you so much for

taking time to help people like me just getting started in this

unfortuante adventure! What would I ever do w/o ya'll? Thank you!!

I changed my mind, I guess personally I WOULD say CT is better at

treating older babies, straight out. I guess i was trying to be too

politically correct by saying it had more to do with the protocol of

wear. But I should be able to say that, speaking from personal

experience, I do think they're better at treating older babies. They

are more experienced and open to the idea that the baby's head can

still change well into the second year and are willing to give it

their all to see that some positive change occurs, no matter the

age. And I am very happy with the results so far.

Yes, CT does only the DOCBand. I believe they were the first to be

FDA approved.

Thanks for the straight talk! Every now and then I get into trouble

saying exactly what I think, but...every now and then it works out!

I'm really glad they treated your son. Maybe we'll get this whole

thing straightned out soon! I'll keep everyone posted! :) Thanks

again,

Hi ...I've been reading the posts and thought I'd chime in with our great experience with CT in Charlotte. My son had severe plagio (20mm asymmetry) and started wearing his first DOC at right around 6 months. He outgrew it at 9 months and corrected down to 10mm...which of course is still moderate. We thought about a second band for a month and decided to go for it. He didn't start wearing his second DOC band until he was 10 months old. He will be out of it in about 2 weeks (he's 13 1/2 months old) and I have seen a ton of improvement in his second band. I'm so glad we did it. Good luck to you - I'm sure you'll get everything sorted out for your little one.
