After hearing 2 very good reviews about Nouveau Prosthetics, we

decided to at least check this place out. The Orthotist Joe was very

nice and patient. He scanned the babies' heads with the STARscanner.

I cannot remember all the figures. I think the asymmetry was 4.7 mm

for Isaac, and 3.6 mm for Garrick. The " symmetry ratio " was 96.7% for

Isaac, and 89% for Garrick. The orthotist thinks that Isaac head is

nearly perfect and Garrick's asymmetry is nowhere near severe. He

honestly told us that it's a border line case. Wearing a helmet may

or may not help. Since they are already 10 months old, they might

also have to wear the helmets for a long time (up to 18 months old) to

see any improvement. I asked him about the symmetry ratios of other

babies who went there for corrections. Joe told me that most babies

had a 60~75% " symmetry ratio " before the treatment and 80~85% symmetry

ratio after the treatment. So our babies' heads are actually more

symmetric than those babies who received treatment there. Joe said

it's up to us to decide and gave us some time to think about it.

When we went to Cranial Tech 2 weeks ago, the orthotist there actually

couldn't tell anything wrong from looking at Isaac's head. I had to

point out to her where the asymmetry is. She looked at the numbers

and told us that Isaac's plagio is a mild to moderate case. She did

not recommend treatment for Isaac. She said Garrick's asymmetry is

moderate. And she would recommend treatment for Garrick. I asked her

if DOC band can help with Isaac's asymmetry. She reassured us that we

will definitely see improvement.(But I was not sure if I can trust her

on that since she seemed not able to discern.) I also asked her how

long the treatment would take. She said for Isaac it could be as

short as 6 weeks, for Garrick it could be 3~4 months.

My husband thinks that it's too much commotion and too little gain. I

am just torn right now. I am not sure what I should do. Their

asymmetry is very obvious to me. It would've been much easier for me

to decide if I know exactly how long the treatment would take and what

kind of improvement they'll make. But now it seems everything is

uncertain. I can be putting them through all this sweat and pain and

sleepless nights for nothing.

Do you have the printed STARscanner report? We might be able to help you

interpret the numbers in more detail. In particular, what is the Cephalic

Ratio measurement, the Oblique Diagonal 1 and Oblique Diagonal 2

measurements and the Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index (CVAI)?

It does sound, just from the numbers, that they are on the milder

side. I'm not sure it helps to compare, but my son started at 15mm

asym and was considered moderate to severe. I believe 2-4mm is

considered " normal. "

Something to keep in mind about the length of treatment both orthos

are saying is that the STARBand only has a life of 6 months and the

DOCBand lasts for 4 months. So they base they length of treatment on

different protocols re: band integrity. One red flag I see is that

the STARBand ortho is saying that he'll have to wear a band for 8

months? So did he say he'd have to wear two bands? For plagio that

mild, even at 10 months old, that seems wrong. I know of someone who

got a STARBand for her son at 9 months and was down with treatment

after just 10 weeks. I'm not sure what degree of severity she

started with, but it's similar in age and is nowhere near 8 months.

That would concern me a lot. My son started treatment at 17 months

and 15mm of asym (19mm in another measurement) and he probably won't

even be in a band for 8 months (and that's with two DOCBands).

Have you posted pictures of the twins yet? If you do we can let you

know what we think, if you're interested in our opinion. Just let us

know.

Good Luck!

Hi ,

I think what Joe meant is that they can wear this STARBand for up

until they are 18 months old. After that head growth rate goes down

so much that banding would not help any more.

I just posted 2 pictures:

Photo Albums > Our Plagio Babies I > Isaac

and

Photo Albums > Our Plagio Babies I > Isaac's twin brother Garrick

These pictures are taken by the photographer at Cranial Tech.

In Isaac's picture, I don't know if you can see the collapsing of the

right side of his face. The distance between his nose to his right

ear seems longer than the distance between his nose to his left ear.

In Garrick's picture, the right side of his face is bulging out.

Do you know why your neurosurgeon thought that your son didn't need a

helmet if his asym was considered moderate to severe?

Hi -

I wish I knew. It would have saved me a year of stress and worry. We

saw the neuro when Jake was 4 months old to rule out cranio, and

since it wasn't that, he said it would round out on its own and to

save our money. I believed what he told me, so I waited. And waited.

And although his flat spot did improve somewhat (but still not that

much), his forehead bulge and ear asym didn't change. At 16 months

old is when he actually measured moderate to severe. So my guess is

that he was fully in the severe category at 4 months old, but the

neuro just didn't believe in helmets.

I looked at the photos, and I do see the right side of Isaac's head

that you're concerned with. My son's head had a similar slant/shape

to start with but I didn't even know it was there until I saw his

headsicle at CT (it really shows you every imperfection). I guess I

was so concerned with the other areas of his head, I just didn't

notice. I will be able to tell you for sure next week when I can

compare his two headsicles myself, but there has been improvement

for Jake on that slant. Our therapist has pointed out the

improvement to me numerous times. And I can see that there is extra

width over length in Isaac's head, so it looks like a combo of

brachy and plagio. Garrick looks more symmetrical too me, but I can

see extra width there too. What do their side photos look like? Is

it pretty flat in the back or are the overhead photos from CT

accurately depicting the level of brachy the way you see it?

I would say that if CT (or anyone) is willing to band them, then I

would. I mean, it can't hurt, if anything it should only help. I saw

both a StarBand ortho and went to CT before banding, and I

personally liked the confidence that CT gave me that " we will see

change, " which sounds like the same message you got from them. I was

dealing with my son's age, and it sounds like you're dealing with

the idea that they may be on the milder side, but if YOU want to try

it, I say go for it, and go with whoever makes you feel more

comfortable. My thought was even the littlist change will help.

Also, if you're going to do one, you might as well do the other.

Otherwise you might fret about that as well.

Good luck!

Hi ,

Did your insurance company pay for both of Jake's DOCbands?

Even though CT's message was more reassuring (she told me that the

band will definitely improve their head shapes and the improvement is

definitely going to be visible), the fact that she could not see

Isaac's asymmetry is concerning me. She even said that I got good

eyes and that I should go work for CT!

I uploaded 3 photos of their side profiles:

Photo Albums > Our Plagio Babies I > Isaac's side profile

Photo Albums > Our Plagio Babies I > Garrick's side profile

Photo Albums > Our Plagio Babies I > Isaac's side profile in the crib

I think in the 1st picture, you can tell that Isaac's right side of

the face looks much smaller than the left side. In the 2nd picture,

the right side of Garrick's face looks much bigger than the left side.

I was hesitating so much because I don't want them to go through many

months of banding for nothing. Also I am afraid of the possibility

that banding could further misshape their heads. It seems that many

people in this group had suffered that.

OMG, how cute is Isaac's hair when it's all dry and fluffy! It's

adorable!

I do see more flatness from the side on both of them. The starscans

only show the shape of the head from the top, and I don't think it's

as noticable from that angle, so maybe Joe is depending too much on

the report and not enough on the head itself? I don't know. Was

their hair slicked down or held down with a stocking cap for the

scan? I agree, that from the scan alone, it looks like Garrick's

head is completely symmetrical. But from the side angle, it looks

like his flatness is slightly worse than Isaac's. Weird.

I don't know of one baby who ended up with a worse shaped head that

went to CT. The worst stories I've heard have come from Danmar and

Hanger helmets, where some of those babies ended up with heads in

worse shape than they started (plagio when they started with brachy,

heads growing out the top of the band because they had nowhere else

to grow), or just no change at all and a lot of time and money

wasted. I personally think you couldn't go wrong with CT, but if you

feel more comfortable going with the STARBand, I still think it

would be worth a shot. Oh by the way, how much experience does Joe

have with the STARBand?

CT was out of network for us, but insurance still covered 75% of the

cost. We haven't heard back about the second claim yet, but I was

told it would be covered as well at the same amount.

Hi ,

Thank you :) Their brachy didn't bother me that much because their

hair pretty much covers it, when it's not wet.

What kind of insurance do you have? Did you have a hard time to get

them to pay for the band?

You are right. It's very weird. Garrick's asymmetry (eyes, cheeks,

forehead) looks much worse than Isaac's. But his figures on the

report is better than Isaac's. I couldn't make sense out of it. Joe

did put a stocking cap on them when he did the scan. Joe has 20 years

of experience banding babies. He used to use his own band. After the

FDA implemented new regulation and requested the practitioners to use

only FDA approved bands/devices, Joe switched to STARband. He has 6

years of experience using STARband. I think he's treated a little

over 100 babies with STARband. Unlike CT which does pediatric cranial

molding exclusively, Nouveau Prosthetics also make artificial limbs

and has other areas of expertise.
