Guest guest
My son Bryce has been in his Starband for four weeks now. The last few days I have noticed a red mark (about the size of a quarter)on the top left side of his head that does not appear to go away, even after the helmet is off. It does blanche when you touch it, but it is still red. It is located on the top of his head, where the helmet is touching. What do you think? I made an appt for tomorrow, but was just wondering what you think it could be. My ortho siad that it sounds unusual and that red marks usually occur on the cheeks and forehead..not the top of the head. It makes sense to me that it would be red, because that is the area the band is touching and we are trying to redirect the groth to make his head less pointy. However, I am obviously not an ortho. So, i don't know what to think. Thoughts or Suggestions are Appreciated!
Guest guest
Usually the head doesn't grow upwards unless there is nowhere else to do (that is what our cranio facial specialist told us). So if the head is high there you probably still don't need to put pressure there. If they shave a little off it will probably correct the problem. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > My son Bryce has been in his Starband for four weeks now. Guest guest
Hi - My son got a red spot on the top of his head last week. He wears a DOCBand and if you can imagine the rounded " cap " that comes up over his forehead bulge, the red spot was on the inside edge of the cap, right above the middle of his forehead. I'm not sure if that is similar to wear Bryce's might be (I know StarBands don't have caps, but the placement of pressure on the forehead bulge should be similar, so maybe it's in a similar location). It was the first week of the second band so it was a new red spot for us and one I kept an eye on for the whole week. It did fade, but would flare up off and on during the day depending on how active he was being. When we took him for his one-week check, the therapist at CT pulled out a cool trick, one I hadn't seen or heard of before. He took out a tube of lipstick and put a little dab of it on the red spot, then put the band on for a few minutes. When he took the band off, the lipstick marked on the foam exactly where the red spot was so he knew where to shave it out. He shaved just the barest minimum of foam, since the entire cap is a holding point, but the red spot hasn't showed up since, so it seems to have done the trick. If Bryce is having a growth spurt, it might be causing new red spots in different areas as his head presses against the pressure points. Hopefully it can be easily adjusted tomorrow and won't reappear. Let us know what the ortho says (especially if it's something new and interesting that we might not have considered!). Good Luck! Guest guest
Our ortho used the same " Lipstick Test " to find out where exactly on the band a spot was rubbing. It allowed her to shave down the bare minimum amount of foam to relieve the pressure.
