Anyone filing/filed with Cigna insurance?

My son finished treatment in January 2008 (his head looks great!), but I'm working on 1st appeal of our claim to Cigna. Would welcome comments on any experience you've had, whether accepted or denied by Cigna.

Hi :My son got his DOCBand in 2000, and we had Cigna insurance then. He was initally denied "due to lack of conservative measures like Postural Therapies, and the abcense of Craniostosis or any other Neurological abnormalities" (spelling errors are theirs...)Because of his odd head shape (very long and narrow/"scaphcephalic"), there was no other molding company at the time who offered a solution besides Cranial Technologies. So we did use that rationale as part of our appeal for using CT. If you have more questions, feel free to email me (tnt@...). We did win on appeal, but it was about Feb or March 2001. before we got our money, and he graduated at the end of October 2000. I

submitted the appeal during treatment. Just to give you a bit of a time frame.Good Luck!mom to Quinn, born 11/99, DOCband grad 10/00------- Original Message -------From : VanderLight[mailto:karen_vanderlight@...]Sent : 6/12/2008 1:17:32 AMTo : Plagiocephaly Cc : karen_vanderlight@...Subject : RE: Cigna Insurance Filing

Hi -

What is Cigna's basis of denial? Did you have coverage for a helmet

and went out of network? Or was there no coverage at all? Have you

checked out our Insurance Help folder in the Files section? There are

examples of appeal letters in there, 2 of which are specific to Cigna.

Also I just posted something from Cigna I happened upon just yesterday

(how ironic!) that seems to be their " coverage position " on cranial

orthotic devices for positional plagio. It looks like each individual

plan still dictates the specific coverage, but it is an overview of

what they require and what I find interesting about it is that it was

just updated in March 2008. So it's current and you might want to

check it out in case you haven't already.

Here is the link to the folder:

Plagiocephaly/files/Insurance%

20Help/

Look under Cigna for your plan specifically, but it might be worth

checking out other appeal letters too if you haven't already. I

glanced through the first couple of pages from the info and it looks

like Cigna is pretty strict, they require an asym measurement of 12mm

in at least one area. I thought a lot of insurance companies said

10mm, so 12mm is the most I've heard so far (but if it was just

updated in March, it may not apply to you since you were done with

treatment by then).

Good luck with everything!

We were denied by Cigna and the 1st appeal was also denied. I haven't

appealed a 2nd time yet. They stated that our plan excluded coverage of

cranial orthodics.
