Guest guest
My daughter likes to sleep on her side. However, the helmet puts pressure on her face and when she wakes up in the morning, she looks like she's been in a fight because her eye gets swollen up. This morning it was almost shut from the pressure and it looked like a big bulge over the eyelid. I'm not sure if it bothers her or not, but you would think it wouldn't be very uncomfortable to wake up with a swollen eyelid. I've asked my ortho about it, he said it was just pressure and wasn't doing any damage to the eye. Just wondering if anyone had a similar experience? Guest guest
Maggie, I guess that's the kind of thing that would worry me too. If the ortho isn't concerned, that's good, but I would run it by her ped or cranio/facial Dr. You don't want her eye swelling shut every night. I'm no expert, but that's not okay and you know that bc you wouldn't have taken the time to post otherwise. I'm getting more and more convinced that we moms need to trust our instincts. I wouldn't wait either. Maybe someone on the boards will come up with an idea to take some pressure off her eye while she's sleeping. Good for you for looking out for her! Guest guest
My 5 month old just recieved the DOC band Thursday and he too is getting a swollen eye on one side. I am concerned about this also. We are going to see the PT Monday and I am going to have her check it out. That does not seem normal to put so much pressure on the face to make the eye swell. He too sleeps face down at night. Did you take the band off till you saw the ortho? Thanks so much! - -- In Plagiocephaly , " " <nwilkens2275@...> wrote: > > I haven't experienced this problem, so I'm not sure how much I can > help but to say that it doesn't seem right that she should be waking > with a swollen eye each morning. He just got the DOC band this Thursday the 5th (he is 5 months old) and his eyes are swollen and a little watery. I am concerned too. I was not sure if I shouls take it off till we see the PT Monday or have him keep wearing it since it is making progress. He too sleeps face down in his crib. It is a little concerning thinking that so much pressure is on his face to make the eye swell. When you took it off did the swelling go down? Thanks for info! (Sorry if this was posted twice.) Guest guest
It doesn't happen every night, just on occasion, but yes, when it does happen, we take the band off for a while and the swelling goes down, usually in about 20 minutes. We have taken her to an eye doctor (after 3 back to back episodes of pink eye) and I was starting to get worried that the band was causing her eye problems, but the eye doctor checked her out and said she was fine. Of course, I was not at the appointment and my husband went and when I asked what he said about the eye swelling, the doctor replied, " Huh " so I don't know how in depth their conversation was or if it was explained in a way to get a definite response from! My pediatrician seemed more worried than my ortho or the eye doctor. Please let me know what information you get from your PT. I will be very interested. Guest guest
They told me it was just pressure on the head like if you sleep on your sheets funny and you get that sheet mark on your face when you wake up in the morning. (He does sleep directly on his face now which he never used to before he got the DOC band.) It is nothing band related. But if it does not go away in the hour (just like the red marks) then you need to call them and maybe come in. He looked better this morning(of coarse since our appointment was today:) She assured me that it had nothing to do with the helmet. Probably like you I was paranoid that his eyes were going to stay that way! His head shape made progress in just 4 days which I was happy about! Hope that helps! (If it get worse I will let you know:) Please do the same:) From: mcdahlin <mcdahlin@...>Subject: Re: Swollen eyePlagiocephaly Date: Monday, June 9, 2008, 8:30 AM It doesn't happen every night, just on occasion, but yes, when it does happen, we take the band off for a while and the swelling goes down, usually in about 20 minutes.
