Hello na, I applaud you for going ahead with the casting the day of the consult. I did the same thing with my son. We loved the DOC band and would not have done things any different. My son was cast at 4 months and wore the band for 8 weeks and graduated on New Years Eve.

I would consider weining him into the band, a few hours on and a few off for the first few days. We did this being that he was given his band on October 31st and we needed to dress him for halloween of course! We went into it slowly over about 3 days and then were in it 23 hours a day. I did buy target 1 1/2 inch foam for the mattress and he slept wonderful on it from day one. I was happy about that since as a baby my son was Colic and at times I thought he would never sleep or stop fussing.

I credit the foam, our attitute of positiveness and overall fit of the band to our successes. I hope you feel the same way about your band.

Things to have onhand are

1. Rubbing alcohol 75 or so % to clean the band. We used a new toothbrush to scrub it and then let it dry next to a table fan.

2. You will need aquaphor in case red spots develope a little bit can help. Also hydrocortizone cream less that 1 % for a young baby incase of severe redness at a pressure point.

3. Buy the foam if you have a target near you. It helped with sleep time.

4. Dont make a big deal about the helmet, if you dont the baby will not.

5. Get it back on as much as possibe. Bath and then dry it and back on.

HiWe waited 2 months for this appointment and sure enough our 6 month old son still requires a helmut so we went for it. The plaster moulding wasn't so bad either, the whole process was maybe 5 minutes. Our next appt. is June 18th, that's when his helmut will ready and he'll be fitted. Is there any advice about how to properly introduce your baby into wearing the helmut for 20 hours a day? I imagine one needs to build up the time they're wearing it.....is an hour at a time a good place to start or more or less? and for sleeping I have to admit I'm worried how that will go. I'm sure there will be lots of challenges ahead for us but I'm glad we're getting this done.thanks everyone for your support, advice and encouragement,Marina

What type of band do you have? We had a STARband and followed the following

protocol for breaking in the band:

Day 1 - 1 hour on/1 hour off/no naps or night-time

Day 2 - 2 hours on/1 hour off/no naps or night-time

Day 3 - 4 hours on/1 hour off/on for naps and night-time

Day 4 - 8 hours on/1 hour off/on for naps and night-time

Day 5+ - 23 hours on/1 hour off/on for naps and night-time

Check with your ortho and see what they recommend.

What is the foam from Target you are referring to? My sons STARband will be ready next Thursday and I am very worried about how he will sleep.

Thank you everyone for saying all of those nice things, inspiring

stories and the encouragement. I am known around these parts as

the " memory foam queen " as I bought a large piece 3 1/2 months ago

and have cut it up for the change tables, car seat, bouncy seat, his

floor mat....anywhere he may lay on his back. I will try some in his

crib too (he usually sleeps on his tummy but that may change when he

wearing his helmut). I don't know what type of helmut this is? it

looks like a football helmut with 4 air holes on top. We had our

appt with the actual guy who is responsible for the design of this

particular helmut and he's been making them for Sick Kids Hospital

since 1990....so I felt good about using his design.

I am so looking forward to the 18th (the day we get the helmut) as

that will be the first day my son's head shape is going to really

start improving. I'm glad I did all the respositioning - the effort

was worth it as we can already see some improvement in the last 2

months....imagine 2 months in a helmut - just can't wait.

thanks again eveyone. I will get the rubbing alcohol and <1%

ready - the big count is on for us.
