Guest guest
Hi everyone. We take the starband off & wash it with the same soap & warm water that we will wash our daughter's hair with, then spray it down with rubbing alcohol. It doesn't dry in an hour, more like 1.5 hrs to 2. So, any techniques you can share? Or do I put it back on damp? That seems kind of yucky. Thanks, Concord, NC Rose, 6 months, Starband 1 week & counting...
Guest guest
When we got our Starband 2 weeks ago, the guy told us to only wash it with a damp cloth and unscented rubbing alcohol...I could be wrong but I don't think you are suppose to use soap and water to clean it with. We only use the alcohol and it only take about 10 minutes for it to dry completely. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in and give some tips > > Hi everyone. > We take the starband off & wash it with the same soap & warm water > that we will wash our daughter's hair with, then spray it down with > rubbing alcohol. Guest guest
The instructions from Orthomerica, makers of the STARband, clearly state: " use only rubbing alcohol to clean the STARband because other products may be harmful to the child's sensitive skin. Vigorously rub the inside of the STARband with a washcloth containing the rubbing alcohol or by applying rubbing alcohol to a new soft toothbrush. Set the orthosis upside down to dry and weather permitting, place the orthosis in the sun to dry. . . The orthosis should not get wet. . . Reapply the orthosis when both your child's hair and the STARband are dry. " The reason it is taking so long to dry is because it isn't being cleaned properly. The liner of the band is porous so any water on the band is going to be absorbed making it take longer to dry. Try just rubbing alcohol and see what happens. If you would like, I can e-mail you the " Caregiver Instructions for Wear and Care of the STARband Cranial Remolding Orthosis " . Guest guest
Do not put it back on wet. Trapped moisture between the foam and the baby's skin will cause skin irritation. We use a DOCBand and were told never to submerge it or get it wet. I'm not sure why some other orthos say differently when it makes so much sense to me NOT to use soap and water. Rubbing alcohol is best because it completely evaporates in about 10 minutes (if not less). I only use rubbing alcohol and put it in front of an oscillating fan and it's ready to go in minutes. Waiting for my son's hair to dry takes much longer... Guest guest
Orthomerica says only alcohol (70 or 90%). Some orthos allow other ways to clean the band, but I'm not sure it is a good idea. You definitely don't want to put the band on wet, it won't be good for the skin. Also depending what you clean it with the residue can irritate the head. We just used alcohol on an old wash cloth, scrubbed it well, and it stayed pretty clean. I've heard drying it in the sun helps too, but we usually did it in the evening. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > Hi everyone. > We take the starband off & wash it with the same soap & warm water > that we will wash our daughter's hair with, then spray it down with > rubbing alcohol. Guest guest
Thanks , I will ask my orthotist why she recommended that procedure for cleaning...an oscillating fan is good idea, too. thanks! Guest guest
The ortho was wrong -- besides the band having the potential of keeping residues in the foam, which can cause skin issues, getting the band wet can compromise the fit as well as adhesion of the foam to the starband. You may want to call Orthoamerica and tell them you are confused with mixed information, (their written recommendations, and his oral which are different from theirs) and ask which you should follow. mom to Quinn, born 11/99, DOCband grad 10/00 for scaphocephalic head shape.-- drying the starbandHi everyone. We take the starband off & wash it with the same soap & warm waterthat we will wash our daughter's hair with, then spray it down withrubbing alcohol. Guest guest
Since the information you received from your ortho contradicts the instructions from Orthomerica I would err on the side of caution and follow the instructions from the people who make the band as they know their product better than anybody else. You may want to call Orthoamerica (800.446.6770) and tell them you are getting two different instructions and see what they recommend.
