" ==== Avoiding Sulphur foods , made chelation and life so much easier for me as well . Before avoiding sulphur, I was fearful in eating anything, in case I'm going to get those aweful side-effects that leave me disfunctional. It was very stressful. I was also losing too much weight. > All day today, I debated what would be worse: living with the sulfur-food > reactions and > the inability to function very well that comes with it, or the constantly > decreasing weight > and feeling of hunger that is always with me. ==== I also have these debates and battles with myself almost on a daily basis. > Chemically speaking, does eating sulfur foods really cause mercury > redistribution? ========In his book Amalgam Illness, Andy Cutler teaches us that 'sulfur/sulphur foods' which are high in free thiols can cause a lot of problems for metal-toxic people through their ability to mobilize mercury. He emphasizes that 'sulfur foods' are foods that contain a high level of free thiol groups and not literally any foods that contain sulfur in any form Is that why we get that reaction? I do get those two phases: total euphoric happiness and energy > the next day, followed hours later by a bad crash in energy, mental > function and mood. ========Same with me , especially coriander and dairy products. We might even enjoy eating these sulphur foods and feel euphoric after each meal, but their bad effects can be delayed and only show up a few hours or even days later. This is typical of a food intolerance. It is a slow allergic-type response that usually takes 2 - 72 hours to manifest, though sulfur food intolerance in mercury toxic people has more to do with the mobilization of mercury that the free thiols cause, rather than a direct allergy/intolerance to sulfur foods per se. Either way, you will need to avoid them if you show an intolerance to them, or, as some people have found, keep them to an absolute minimum. It seems there is a critical threshold of sulfur food intake (or perhaps more accurately cysteine blood level) for many and if they remain below this, little harm is done. > Will I just end up allowing more mercury damage if I " put up with " the > reactions in order to > gain back the weight? =======Yes. this is also such a dilemma for me being sulphur intolerant and under-weight (using HC has helped me put on some weight so i don't look anorexic anymore and helped to keep it on plus of course supporting my adrenal fatigue. (My BMI is now rather fine. I'm 1,76m and weight 69kg, 47 y/o) I've had to cut out most of my comfort foods (sulfur : broccoli, spinach, cheese, miktart, etc, etc, etc) It was SO hard to do but it is well worth it as you said. Just like you, I indulged the other day by having a whole milk tart by myself for a treat and thought I'll just deal with the side-effects this time. (the reason for eating a whole milktart , was to " celebrate " my first round of ALA (3mg) that I had no side-effects. I knew I was being wreckless but did it anyway. That was Monday, and I expected something to happen within the next 3 days - it is now Saturday and nothing.!Wow! Am I more tolerant of these foods now? I don't know, but I'm still avoiding sulfur foods as much as I can.( The side-effects are dreadful and unexplainable) Still eat lots of meat, little milk in tea, still have coffee.I know I'll probably feel better cutting them all out probably, but at least now I'm functional > > Maybe I need sulfur-free recipes from some of you, or something. This is > really a dilemma > and I don't know who can help me figure this one out. As I write this (the > reaction hasn't > hit yet), I am really glad that, for once, my hunger has been sated for > the night. I fear I > will regret it in about 24 hours. ==== I'm so glad for you that for one time your hunger was satisfied. I know how that feels. here is my big weapon against sulfur food and it makes me less fearful if I coincidently or deliberately eat sulfur. In a message on the Frequent Dose Chelation group Andy Cutler says: " I estimate that 33-50 % of mercury toxic people have elevated cysteine. If you have elevated cysteine and you want to convert some glutathione, take 2:1 weight ratio of glutamine and glycine and your body will do the rest. " Please read this link that includes information from Dr Cutler on sulfur, cysteine levels and other important information related to this subject. Also go to this link for more lists on sulfur foods and supplements http://www.livingnetwork.co.za/healingnetwork/sulfur_sulphur_foods.html I wish you well and hope dearly that the meatloaf, milk ,cookies, etc decided to not haunt you this time. Hope this info helps you a little , or alot. Specially Andy's advice on taking glutamine and glusine (avoid taking NAC with this !) Good luck to you.
