Hi everyone, I apologize for the repeat posting, but I wanted to get the message out that this webinar on creating and using fotonovelas is being broadcast tomorrow (Tuesday) at 2pm EST. Thank you, Fotonovelas: An Effective HIV/AIDS Education Tool for Rural Latino Communities Join us for a Webinar on August 31 Title: Fotonovelas: An Effective HIV/AIDS Education Tool for Rural Latino CommunitiesDate:Tuesday, August 31, 2010Time:2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT Creating culturally competent prevention education materials is a challenging task, but it is needed to ensure community members' self-identification of risk and adoption of healthy behaviors. Poder Sano, an initiative of Farmworker Justice, invites you to join a dynamic one-hour "talk show" featuring Rural Women's Health Project (RWHP) from Gainesville, FL as they discuss their experience with fotonovelas, a type of prevention education material. For 19 years, RWHP has developed novela-style materials co-created with community members. Using a community-based participatory approach, community realities are woven into the health messages. These materials are developed to complement the work of lay-health workers (promotores). In this webinar, we will address the qualities of effective fotonovelas and how they serve as a vital tool in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in rural Latino communities. By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: *explain what a fotonovela is and how it is created; * list 3 ways that promotores de salud can effectively use fotonovelas in their HIV/AIDS outreach work; * discuss the pros and cons of using fotonovelas; and, * explain how fotonovelas can be adapted to particular communities. About Rural Women's Health Project (RWHP): The Rural Women's Health Project uses community-based approaches in the development of health education projects, trainings and materials. Their mission is to assist in the broadening of communities' understanding of critical health issues, thereby increasing their capacity to replicate programs and strengthen their advocacy work.
