Guest guest
How do you get tested for MTHFR? Is there a blood work? Does the whole family with an affected child gets the test done if there is one? We got my daughter's folate antibodies test done and she had slightly elevated blocking antibody value. It has also been associated with pregnancy issues and being able to maintain pregnancies as women will not be able to support their own folic acid levels and a baby's. Occasionally it will be a little more serious and can cause early heart disease resulting in heart attacks as early as late 20's (if not treated). On rare occasion a bad combination of the 50 MTHFR genes will pair up and a person will end up with the inability to process metals and sulfates. Folic acid breaks down homocystine. However, people with MTHFR have issues with absorbing or maintaining folic acid (they aren't sure), so they have low lvls of it and their homocystine can get out of control. They also have a tendency to have B vitamin deficiency, so treatments usually includes a large dose of folic acid and a gambit of B vitamins. We also have to avoid all metals and sulfates, including vaccinations (flu has thermerisol and those that don't have aluminum). There is also a long list of medication we have to avoid that raise homocystine levels (seizure medicine), lower folic acid, or could kill a person because their body can't process Nitrous Oxide. http://paws4piper.weebly.com/mthfr-faq.html > > > > *** > > > > Sulfates are also bad for these kids. Guest guest
Pratima, Being a gene disorder makes it a family disorder....one of the articles I read showed 10% of the population has the disorder, most don't even know they have it. Just like many other things, knowing about it can help families circumvent issues that arise from the lack of enzymes & issues having to do with folate/folic acid and the convertion of the amino acid homocysteine to methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and other important compounds. If you have concerns with any of the above I would absolutely look into the DNA testing that looks at MTHFR. It is blood DNA testing. Here's some brief info...ask your Dr for more info: http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/gene/MTHFR Here's a link to info on the blood test: http://www.ehow.com/how_6885243_test-mthfr.html Both people I know had the genetic testing after late term pregnancy losses, my neice was almost 8 months along. It is my understanding from conversations with my neice (who has researched this further than I w/a genetics Dr) that the gene comes from both carrier parents...in our family no one even knew until this testing was done. Knowing about it now helps our family start to take control of some of the symptoms & health issues that have impacted our family....knowing & being proactive is better because there are things we can do to help the body function better. I wanted to make highlight this comment from the 2nd link above: Tips & Warnings Mutations in the MTHFR gene are only a determinate factor in hyperhomocysteinemia. The leading cause of hyperhomocysteinemia is folate deficiency. Next look up Folate deficiency: Even basic Wiki shows some of the signs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folate_deficiency I found it interesting that B12 has a role here too! Depression, neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin, epinephrine, nocotinamides, purines, phospholipids), homocysteine and impaired metabolism of neurotransmitters (especially dopamine, serotonin from tyrosine and tryptophan), phospholipids, myelin, and receptors. All important stuff to our bodies & all items of regular issues w/our kids & frequent discussion on this list...for that matter w/us parents too. I'm still in a learn mode myself on this stuff...hope it helps. Blessings, Rita > > > > > > > > > & nbsp; > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Tammy, > > > > > > I thought of your post on MTHFR & amp; thought I'd send you the info I came upon & amp; just sent to my neice....feel free to pass to your friend too: > > > > > > > > > > > > https://sites.google.com/site/drjoneskids/mthfr/mthfr-more-notes > > > > > > ps there are 2 other tabs on MTRFR on this site that are also worth checking out....also, Dr is highly respected in thecircle of docs from many in my biomedical recovery group. > > > > > > > > > > > > ----Copied from above links site:----- > > > > > > MTHFR Notes > > > > > > Warning to MTHFR patients- Using nitrous oxide (laughing gas- anesthesia) can cause major problems, including death. > > > > > > Nitrous oxide, when given to people with MTHFR, blocks the production of methionine, which plays an important role in DNA synthesis of neurotransmitters and myelin, the insulating material covering nerves. http://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/genetic-issues/375471-mthfr-nitrous-oxide.\ html > > > > > > *** > > > > > > Explanation of MTHFR: Most of the population has some form of it causing easy bruising or a clotting issue.
