Guest guest
Hi Janice: At 2 years old the child should have some words. At 18 months there is a checklist the pediatrician should do and on there it asks about how many words the child can say. Landon had 3 words when he was 18 months old and we were referred to EI. He should have had around 25 words and at 2 years old they should be able to put 2 or 3 words together. This child could be delayed or maybe he has had many ear infections that have caused a delay. As you get to know this person or see this person more often, you can ask more questions about his speech. I would tread lightly with these conversations and leave out the science. If Mark was non-verbal at 2 years old tell her his story of how he was non-verbal and referred to Early Intervention where he had a speech evaluation and started speech therapy to help him. If a child has a speech delay and not a speech disorder, speech therapy won't harm the child, but assist the child in speaking or catching up to his peers. If this isn't Mark's story, tell her this is how it went for someone's else child you know. You could just tell her that you have noticed the little boy doesn't have many words and that Early intervention is free and her pediatrician can refer the little boy for an evaluation. If this is her first child, she will be grateful for some help. I had a child already before Landon so I knew when he was 15 months old that there was something wrong. Landon was always right around 4 months behind his brother on milestones. My other son was already using 2 word combinations by the time he was 12 months old. Guest guest
Great advice. There is an autistic kid in town whose parents are in serious denial. There is milk allergy throughout the family. The mom only takes direction from her own mom. In talking to grandma I waited for her to tell me about grandson's " speech delay " and when she did I said we learned part of 's deal was milk. She told me (which I already knew) that autistic boy had a milk allergy as a baby. Then a mutual friend talked to the mom about apraxia research on my end. From slow and steady talking to me, a mom of a PDD Nos kid at her school and her own sister-in-law who told her to read the McCarthy book the mom is seeing what is in front of her and the boy is getting help. Slow and steady. > > > > > > Do you know where I could find an age equivalence chart for the > > > Preschool Language Scale Fourth Edition (PLS-4)? > > > > > > My son's speaking vocabulary is the age equivalence of 2 years > 11 > > mos > > > and his speech is the age equivalence of less than 2 years.
