Guest guest
When these programs are used, do the children need to wear headphones? My son will not tolerate headphones b/c of sensory issues but I'm curious are these progams successful w/o using them? Marie
Guest guest
We had to use bone conduction headphones. My boys did not like them at first but got used to wearing them. They did not have sensory issues regarding them, though. marie1330 <mariespence@...> wrote: When these programs are used, do the children need to wear headphones? Guest guest
Wonderful post! We started the program 'after' Mark had language and was older so it is useful to see that it helps the younger children work their language to develop it. Good information for the young moms! Janice [sPAM][ ] Re: Listening Programs My son (autism-PDD-NOS, age 3) started on a listening program about 6 weeks ago. It was recommended by his OT (the one he sees outside of pre-school). It's the Vital Sounds program and he wears headphones for it. I do a half hour twice a day at home and also when he sees his OT twice a week. I do a half hour in the morning when he first gets up, then a half hour right after school. He really responds well to it-I can leave him " unattended " with books or crayons (in his booster seat, so my walls don't get " decorated " )and he chatters away, sometimes sways to the music if he's standing. His speech is noticeably increased during and after the sessions and it's a very " grounding " experience for him- no stimming, none of the incessant lining up of objects that he usually does...My parents noticed the calming effect it has on him when I was at their house over the holidays, and they also commented on how " chatty " the sessions make him. We change the CD every 2 weeks. It's important to know that there can't be TV or other music playing in the background while using the headphones and also that sessions need to be conducted at least 3-4 hours before bedtime as it can often cause sleep disturbances if used too close to bedtime. I don't fully understand how it works (it was explained to me-if memory serves me-that the synthesized music takes out certain tones and adds them back as a way to stimulate the receptive language centers in the brain), but I've seen real language development and his comprehension has increased, he also strings more words together, and he's really trying to learn how to tell me what he wants and jsut share things with me when he's happy. Sorry this got so long........ Tracey, Long Island
