Guest guest
Hmmmm... Dr. K told me they changed their casting schedule to every 8 weeks for kids who are 2 and under based on recommendations from Ms. Mehta...they used to go longer between casts. Once they hit the age of 2, they go 12 weeks between casts. Erie won't do the waterproof casts unless the curve is under 20 degrees. They do plaster for anything over that. Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) Question for everyone? Hi, Hansen here. I have noticed from reading everyones posts that there are differences in the way Erie and Salt Lake do the casting. First Salt Lake said they will not even try the waterproof casts because they do not believe they hold as well. That is what Dr. D told me in my last visit a few weeks ago. My real question is: It seems like Erie changes their cast much more frequently than in Salt Lake. From what I have been reading most of the kids in Erie have their casts changed every two months were in Salt Lake they go anywhere from 3-5 months. Lily's longest cast was for 4 months and she has never " grown out of a cast. " Just wondering what the thinking is there between doctors? I was is Erie back last November when Min Mehta was there and Lily was in her first full body cast. She had been in it for two months and we were going to get in changed in SLC the next week. I asked Mehta what she thought about this? Lily started at a 46 degree curve and in the first cast she was 8 degrees. Mehta told me that the longer they can stay in each cast the better. Not sure why. I ended up having it change anyway because Lily had too many diaper explosions and it had gotten clear up in the cast. Of course she was in the full body cast with her legs spread way out so it had gotten very stinky. Although we did not get as good of correction as the first cast until our fourth cast. I have just always wondered about the difference in cast length between the two locations. Does anyone know how long Mehta kept her casts on? Thanks Hansen
Guest guest
Hi and Lily, How are you guys? In my opinion, the Erie docs are a little more liberal and willing to try new and hopefully improved methods. I feel like they are taking what they learned from Dr. Mehta, using the main idea (traction table, plaster with curves >20, etc.) and are experimenting with other cast materials. I believe SLC still does over the shoulders too? Anyway, like said, I think even Dr. Mehta's thoughts were if the child was less than 2, then 2 months would be best, and if they were 2+ then three months is best. Am I right? We have been on a 2 month schedule and gotten correction everytime. But who knows, maybe if the cast was on longer, more correction would have resulted? I don't know what the correct answer is, but Cole is getting great correction (48 degrees down to 8 degrees) so I will just go with that. Whether you are in Erie or SLC, the docs are awesome, and are still the only two places in the U.S. with the correct table and practicing the correct method trained by Dr. Mehta. Hope all is well with your family. We'll be in Utah Aug. 19-26, but will be in St. . Hopefully we can meet up again sometime. Take care. /Cole Hansen <hansenmh1@...> wrote: Hi, Hansen here.
