Guest guest
Kathy, The NC trip would definately be the most ideal for my Mark but..... we are from Canada so I need to improvise. I don't believe that he is able to cross the border on his own until he is 15 and the cost of flying us both to NC is prohibitive. I notice that in the NC camps, the parents are expected to get the kids there themselves BUT in the LA and the Florida camps, they pick up the children from the airport and bring them back! (Perhaps when he is 15, I can figure out a way to get him to NC). So.... I think that what we could do is to fly to Utah for our evaluation and then I could send Mark up to LA.... have them send him back to Seattle where my sister lives. She can grab him for a few days and his dad (who lives just across the border) can come get him from there...... So. Doing this will be a miracle in logistics! But, I really feel it is one of the last things that Mark's 'hands' really need! A camp where he climbs and pulls ropes with people who are understanding and 'get it' yet who will continue to push him forward in a kind manner. The athletic nature of the camp has Mark really pumped and he is absolutely wickedly excited about the idea so I believe that he is ready..... hope so! The cost is definately crazy but if this camp does what I think that it will do for Mark's self-esteem, maturity and independence.... then it will be worth it. I also like the idea of him really getting fit and challenging himself physically. I just have this gut feeling that this is exactly what he needs right now, less therapy and more real life extreme challenges. Looks like an awesome place for our older children.... just to finish them off.... Balsam NC is not far from my parents and that area of the country is amazing - waterfalls, rivers, mountains, etc. While the cost seems high, they do have weekend programs that seem much more affordable. My child is not yet old enough for this, but something I'm going to bookmark for the future. It would be great to send him to something where he is much more like everyone else and where they focus on the whole child's well being, rather than simply the skills, or filling time.
