These are some of the reasons I found for when my daughter has sleep issues:

1. poop problems-she is constipated and is having gas pains, etc.

2. sound sensitivity-even if the house is settling, any sudden sound can

disturb her sleep, so background sound (music or if I'm watching tv) will work.

3. she has something with sugar content even if it is naturally sweet

(fruit juice).

4. she went to bed too early. This could even be one hour earlier than

usual-wakes her up in the middle of the night.

5. going through a growth spurt.

I try to give her a bath before going to sleep and do keep background sound

on during the night. Also, I try not have her eat too close to sleeping.

I can only tell you that my son did not sleep a full night until about 3.5

yrs old. He would get up several times a night. I didn't do anything

different to change things. I just stuck with a nightly routine almost to

the minute. And that seem to work. Today, he knows that he goes to bed

right after a certain tv show. He doesn't fight it. And he sleeps 10-11hrs

a night. I paid my dues!

I have a 3 year old daughter recently diagnosed with apraxia now

receiving ST, OT, on Omegas, Vit E. She is a very energetic little

girl who has never been a very good sleeper. Unfortunately, for the

past five months she has been tossing and turning from about 12 am to

3 am and will usually get out of bed numerous times during this time

period. We have tried behavioral interventions, have had her off of

naps for some time, and now at the recommendation of our developmental

pediatrician, have started 2 mg of Melatonin per night with no results.

Has anyone had to deal with this problem and if so, any suggestions?

Does she have any sensory dysfunction issues? My son had trouble

staying still to fall and stay asleep due to proprioceptive sensory

dysfunction. When Vit E eliminated that for him, he began to sleep

fine.

Too much energy may speak to gas or other stuff. We had that with my

nonapraxic kid. It can go either way. My speech kid slep too much.

Turns out both had gut issues.

Eeew.....

I am sorry that the melatonin isn't working for her. That one always has done

the trick for us. You can try epsom salts baths which might get her to find

deep relaxation. And another trick you might want to try is a nice L-theanine

chewable. It doesn't pack the punch that melatonin does so I don't know if it

will work for her. It always makes me very relaxed and it is good for our kids

with attention issues as well.

Tough when the child isn't sleeping for then therapy doesn't work well nor

school and parents are cranky too!

You might want to consider taking her to a sleep clinic if this

continues. I know a number of adults who received a lot of great

advice by going this route.

Also, are you giving any supplements in the late afternoon/early

evening that might be disrupting sleep?

My kids sleep but whether you put them to bed at 7 or 10 they wake up

at the same time. Not sure whatthat is. Problematic as I married a

manchild when it comes to bedtimes.

Have you tried giving the fish oils first thing in the morning? I find

the oils keep my child awake if given any time after 10am.

Can somebody tell me how they get the fish oil in their kids? We have tried the

coromega paste and also the nordic naturals liquid. My 3.5 year old is just

disgusted, but I feel it is a very important supplement.

Thanks, Drew

This is really interesting. I wonder why that is. We usually give

earlier in the day but I did have a few up all nights and it does

coincide with later doseage. Of course I never put it together until

now. I thought at the time it was because we started TLP.

I give my kids the Carlsons Cod Liver Oil. They actually love it and come

running when I ask " Who wants their fish? " in the morning! All the kids get it,

even the NT ones. It really doesn't taste bad at all. I personally liked the

Coromega Lemon-Lime packets when I used them.

--------- Re: [ ] Re: sleep concerns

I mix the fish oils into whatever will work. I tried giving it to him straight -

no go. So I started mixing into his milk - that got old for Josh after awhile.

Then I mixed it into applesauce - that got old after awhile. I've been putting

in his bowl with oatmeal in the a.m., or on his plate with whatever he eats for

breakfast. I honestly don't think he's getting all of the fish oil but I don't

think it's very much that he is missing and it's much better than none. I've

been giving him fish oils for about 5, almost 6 years now and it just changes

over time what works. Best suggestion, just experiment and improvise!

Drew -how to get fish oils in to the child

http://www.cherab.org/information/dietaryeffects/efatips.html

But that and much more is in the archives.

The following archive new member/fish oils 101 will probably help:

Below is a new member archived message, and an " EFA 101 basics "

archived message to hopefully answer more of your questions for now

(did you read The Late Talker yet?) For updated information on

vitamin E and more - please visit the links section here

/links

What type of apraxic like speech behaviors are you seeing that makes

you and the SLP suspect your child has apraxia vs. a simple delay in

speech? Is your child talking at all yet? At your child's age -

without speech, it's difficult to diagnose verbal apraxia -they

could " suspect " verbal apraxia and begin treatment just in case,

which wouldn't hurt your child if he ended up just having a simple

delay. Just a few questions before we could provide more accurate

answers:

Does your child have signs of oral apraxia? (for example, can he on

command smile, imitate funny faces, blow bubbles...if you put peanut

butter anywhere around his mouth can he lick it off no matter where

it is?)

http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/oralapraxia.html

Does your child have any neurological " soft signs " such as hypotonia

or sensory integration dysfunction?

http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/parentfriendlysoftsigns.html

Who else evaluated your child? Was it only the SLP through your

town school or was he also in Early Intervention through the state?

(birth to three) Was he evaluated by both a speech pathologist as

well as an occupational therapist? Was/were they knowledgeable

about apraxia? (If your child wasn't diagnosed by an occupational

therapist as well and professionals suspect apraxia -I highly

recommend you request that too either through both the school as

well as private through insurance for many reasons)

To answer any questions you may have about taking your child to see a

neurodevelopmental MD if he has not yet been to one and apraxia is

suspected... in one word - " Yes!!! " I would have your child diagnosed

(private) by a neurodevelopmental medical doctor (developmental

pediatrician or pediatric neurologist) who is knowledgeable about

apraxia and other neurologically based multi-faceted communication

impairments for numerous reasons. Reasons include (but not limited

to)

*having a " hero " on the outside of the school who can assist in a

therapeutic plan and oversee your child's development over the years

*advocacy support with the insurance company

* ruling out or confirming any neurological soft signs or any other

reasons for the delay in speech

*help those that ask " why isn't he talking yet " understand this is a

medical condition -and has nothing to do with your child's cognitive

ability. (if in your child's case it doesn't. Apraxia in itself

does not affect a child's cognitive ability -and speaking early or

late is no indication of a child's intelligence. Also contrary to

popular belief -most who have speech impairments have average to

above average intelligence)

Here's an article written by Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician Dr.

Marilyn

Agin that was featured as a cover article in Contemporary Pediatrics -

a

trade magazine for hundreds of thousands of pediatric medical

professionals

across the US. (I wrote the parent guide)

" The " late talker " -when silence isn't golden

Not all children with delayed speech are " little Einsteins " or garden

variety " late bloomers. " Some have a speech-language disorder that

will persist unless warning signs are recognized and intervention

comes early. Includes a Guide for Parents. "

Please tell me about the Vitamin E! My son has Proprioceptive Issues

wakes several times each evening looking for deep pressure. He needs

to squeeze my fingers to fall back asleep, but is always up again

Hi

My son, now 8, has never been a good sleeper. As a newborn he would

wake up at 2:00am and be up for the day with only a cat nap here and there.

As he matured it got a lot better and I think the vitamin e helped alot.

If your son is looking for deep pressure, have you thought of a weighted

blanket?

I made my own by sewing tube socks filled with rice into a comforter.

My son has always been a responder to weights. He sits on a therapy ball

at school with a weighted stuffed dog on his lap. He has lots of

proprioceptive issues and weight helps with this. The lap dog is 5lbs which

seems

alot but the heavier it is, the more he responds.

I know they sell weighted blankets at on-line special needs stores but they are

very expensive. I really can't sew but lining up tube socks filled with

rice...even i

managed that much to my surprise!

hope this helps

Sandy

Just my two cents: we've always given his second dose with

dinner (4:00ish in our house). He's almost always snoring away

before 7:00, with no night wakings.

In general, my kids get a lot of sleep (almost 12 hours per night),

and I wonder how other kids function on so much less. Most of our

friends put their kids to bed around 8:30 or 9:00, or later. I would

love to keep them up later, as they don't see Dad in the pm at all,

but they are unbearable with less sleep.

You can find a lot of information in under Links on this web page.

There is a folder about Vit E. But the gist of it is - back last

Aug 2006, our very own Dr. accidentally figured out

that Vit E was helping her severely dyspraxic/apraxic son. Please

go to Post #50746 to see the first post on this (this is in the

folder I mentioned as well).

It turns out that Vit E deficiency symptoms look very much like the

signs and symptoms that afflict many of the kids discussed on this

message board (speech problems, sensory problems, ataxia, etc).

For us, Vit E was a miracle. My son had major vestibular and

proprioceptive sensory dysfunction that was literally eliminated

with the first dose of Vitamin E that he took. He needs a steady

stream of it throughout the day to keep the sensory seeking at bay.

Over the past 16 months we slowly increased to the dose we are at

now, which is higher than most people are using. But many people

see very good results at lower doses and like I said we saw results

immediately.

There is no good way to say what the dose should be for any

particular child. All of this is anecdotal until Dr. is able

to get research funding. But we started out with 200IUs d-alpha and

200mg d-gamma in the first dose. We use Vitamin World High Gamma

Tocopherol that has that dose in one capsule that you can squeeze

the oil out of.

We have experienced that brand of Vit E does matter. So if you buy

some Vitamin E and it doesn't work for you, don't give up hope,

another brand might help. We have also experienced that giving d-

alpha without d-gamma doesn't work for us. Plus, giving high doses

of d-alpha can deplete a person's d-gamma, so you want to give some

so that you don't cause a deficiency.

I could go on and on, but the folder I mentioned will have most of

the info you want. If you have any other questions about our

experience, please feel free to ask here or on private email. You

can also do a search by using " fkewatson " and see all my old posts.

Most of our story is there.

Both of my children have a problem with getting a full nights sleep.

One of them does as your child, he (6yo) wakes up after being sleep

for about 3-4 hours. Then after waking 2-3 times, he will sleep real

good just before it's time to get up. He also sweats at night and

wants to sleep with an ice pack.

My oldest child (8yo) has a hard time falling to sleep and did have

the waking problem as the 6yo until we started the DAN protocol. I

have given him melatonin but no more than 1 ml which seems to give him

bad dreams and wake him. So, I stopped it and the first night he

slept all the way through.

One thing the DAN told me was that I need to cut all light sources

out. Because even a little can interfer with sleep.

We use an air purifier at night for the noise. Also, epsom salts in

the a warm foot bath before bedtime, puts my two right to sleep. But,

I can't get that in all the time.

She may need more than 2 mg of melatonin. The dose is not age-based

and the necessary dose can vary quite a bit. You might also want to

try time-release melatonin. GABA and 5HTP might also help. Have you

tried giving her 5HTP at dinner time?

My son used to wake up easily after going to bed when a baby and

toddler. We think allergy played a role. We also think lost sleep

played a role in his delays. When he goes to bed it is solid sleep

now. He wakes early but gets the right amount of sleep. One thing

with both of my kids though is that they wake the same time

regardless of when put in for bed. Neither is big on naps but they

are doing well. If melatonin does not work after adjusting dose, etc.

I would consider ruling in or out food and/or environmental

allergies.
