Guest guest
I saw your post. My daughter has flat feet and pronation as well. I don't think pediatricians take this seriuosly. When I brought up my concern to the pediatrician he said to " wait and see " she was still growing. So I went straight to a podiatrist and had her fitted for orthotic inserts. It has definitely made a difference. Just thought I'd mention this option. Also an orthopedist may be able to address this conern. Hope this helps. Good luck. > > I am getting discouraged about Pediatricians on a daily basis. My 3 > year old with severe phonology problems needs orthodic shoes because > of a pronation problem. Guest guest
Think of how I feel. I just spent 6 months on a waiting list to see an ENT here in Canda. Once my son passed the hearing test (which he always does), the doctor didn't even look in his ears. I commented on his nasal tone of voice but no.... the doctor did not examine the mouth or throat. When I complained, he ordered a CT scan and an ENG.... more tests.... no physical examination whatsoever! We had 5 minutes with this guy before we were dismissed. That was it. I was so upset yesterday..... I felt a real pain in my heart as I realized that because Mark is older, no one wants to look at him or treat him. He has a neurodevelopmental disorder and that is that. It is plain and simple in their eyes. When your child is young, the doctors are far more willing to investigate and pursue other avenues. Apparently, kids in Canada with neurodevelopmental disorders don't warrant even a cursory examination! I can't remember the last time that any doctor so much as took off Mark's shirt to examine him! What happened to good old fashioned medicine anyway? It makes me feel so helpless and depressed. It really is worth it to look for an extremely attentive doctor. I get jealous of all of you in the US who's doctors practices rely upon your 'choosing them' for how well they do the job! The nurse practitioner suggested that I change my pediatrician and was horrifed by his lack of attention to Mark..... but of course, I would require his permission to get a 'second opinion'. Good luck with that one! Janice [sPAM] [ ] I need to scream!!!!!! I am getting discouraged about Pediatricians on a daily basis. My 3 year old with severe phonology problems needs orthodic shoes because of a pronation problem. I went to a new pediatrician last week to get a prescription. He said if the PT think sshe needs the shoes he will write the prescription since he does not know a lot about orthodics.I asked her old PT to come to the house to check her feet. Then he asked me if I had any other issues. I said no. I told him that our daughter's speech was improving(has alreay mastered 3/4 goals on her IEP that was written 2 weeks ago!), her constipation problem was under control, she no longer had hypotonia and does not qualify for PT services, her hearing is perfect now that she had PE tubes placed and adnoids removed. She had not had a cold and we are completely off asthma meds. I said she was great. He then proceeded to look at DD as if he was looking at her under a microscope. As a sped teacher I knew what he was doing as soon as he looked at her hands.(My daughter has fabulous receptive and cognition) I said to the Ped. " She does not have Downs " . He then said what I just told him was most of the characteristics of Downs. I told him my background having a masters degree and BA in Special Ed with concentration in MR. He then said it is not entirely uncommon to find a 3 year old with trisomy 21. At that point I wanted to scream....I just came in for a shoe prescription!!!!!! I told him a Dev. Ped, Neurologist, 6 SLP, 3 PT's, 2 OT's, Pediatricians, and my brother who is a pediatrician recognize Downs or trisomy 21.I left his office which I was there a total of 15 minutes pissed off.Fast forward one week. We have been on a wait list for 3 months to see a Dev. Ped for a follow up from last year. Today I got a call for an appointment for tomorrow. The Pediatrician we saw called the Dev. Ped. and red flagged our daughter. When the Dev. ped's office called she said they know what happened last week and I said I was upset. They said they already knew....This doctor saw my daughter with a team last year for 2 1/2 hours and concluded she was smart , but need intense S & L therapy. I needed to vent on how irresponsible doctors can be . We will see what tomorrow will bring. If we do not like the outcome I will fly to where my brother practices and have him pull strings for us to see the best Ped. Dev. doctor he knows. Sorry I just had to vent....none of my friends would understand.
Guest guest
My Daughter has been wearing orthodics since she was 15 months old. I need a new prescription every year. This prescription is for orthopedics shoes and inserts. They cost over $400.00 so I want my insurance company to pay for them. This is the only reason I went to the Ped. > > > > I am getting discouraged about Pediatricians on a daily basis. Guest guest
Not knowing where you live this may be a pointless suggestion but if you are at all near a Shriners Children's Hospital why not go there? They are free and can even provide transportation via a volunteer from your local temple. They have vans for that purpose realizing some children will be in wheelchairs. The orthotics would be free, too. We go to the on in Springfield, MA. Darlene > > > > > > I am getting discouraged about Pediatricians on a daily basis. Guest guest
Just brought my son (7) to a Ped Ortho as his feet rotate outward (duck-footed) and his ankles roll in. After x rays and everything, he said the problem was in his hips, not in his feet or his ankles. One previous visit to a Podiatrist recommended orthotics and the Ped Ortho said if you go to a Podiatrist with a headache, he will still prescribe orthotics. It is just the way his bones are attached to his hip that causes the outward rotation and he didn't even want a follow-up. He is a well recommended doctor and seems very honest to me. He said as he gets older it will straighten out a bit. If your child walks inward, he probably sits in the " w " position as my child is hyperflexible at the hip and could never sit in the " w " position but can sit in a yoga style comfortably or put his feet up to and behind his head easily. Hope this helps, Lori In a message dated 9/25/2007 11:33:27 P.M. Guest guest
Hey, I am really sorry that happened to you. I had the same thing happen to me multiple times doctors want to evaluate my son or send him to a ped doctor for checking for autism. He had already been evaluated by a dev ped that is very good and specialized in autism and he had ruled out autism for Liam, (but they didn't know that) So I know how you feel, but try to take solace in the fact that this doctor was being throughout. It is better for docs to be looking for these kinds of issues in all their patients rather than missing it in scores of patients. My husband is in the military and while the insurance is good, problems arise because you never see the same doctor. So I have to re-explain my son's condition to every doctor we go to, even for a common cough, because they try to tell me " wooooah you need to get your son into a dev ped " , and I am like, " LOOK AT HIS CHART! He has been and been and been , don't worry I am on top of this! " They all don't look at his chart or well enough and think they are the first doc to address any of his special needs. There is one doc at the military treatment facility who knows Liam, and I trust him he is really good, so I always try to get into him. The only thing about him is he won't test for nutritional deficiencies, he just says to take a multi vitamin and that will cover anything.... Anyway, I am sorry that happened to you. SMILE. Hope this helps, This is correct-- he sits in the " W " shape, but that's something we've had to change since he had Blount's disease. I believe that it's a little different though-- here's what I think-- Blount's disease is an ortho problem that is extremely rare ( gee, how nice! lol) and it causes SEVERE bowing of the legs. The in-toeing is caused BY the Bowing of the legs. Now-- the Bowing was treated with leg braces from the waist to the toes, and it corrects ONLY the bowing, and cannot fix the in-toeing. So we're done with that treatment, which is a medical necessity and it's all totally UN-related to the Apraxia/Dyspraxia Here's my thought tho-- because while there is a *VERY SLIGHT* medical reason why he would have ONE leg toe-in, the Ortho man outright said that it does NOT warrant his severe in-toeing. In other words, there's no real MEDICAL reason why he should walk toe over toe. I believe that because his legs were so severely bowed for the last 2 1/2 yrs, that's how his motor planning tells him the legs should go. At This point, I believe that the in-toeing is a direct result of that, and that the MOTOR PLANNING needs to be re-trained to get his mind to catch up with how the legs need to go. So while there WAS a definite medical reason for the bowing and in-toeing, I think that the problem NOW is the Dyspraxia coming to play in all of it. Soooo-- to get this all on paper in a paper trail with the insurance company, so prove that it's all medical so they will PAY for all the PT, is something I'm working on. The current theory is my unaddressed milk allergy caused malabsorption and this was one of the results. I appreciate your thoughts on this, as it was YOUR experience. My son actually has a rare orthopedic disease, however, and that is the definite 100% cause of the severe in-toeing up to this point. I sent this in a previous email, but just in case it wasn't received--- My thoughts is that due to the Blount's disease which bowed his thighs severely and forced the in-toeing, I think that his motor planning obviously tells him that his feet are to go inward. Now that the MEDICAL issues are cleared up (very recently), I believe it's a matter of re-training the Motor planning to have his brain recognize where his feet need to be. he's a non-milk drinker and doesn't do dairy-- so that's definitely not the problem!
