Creating Solutions in the Classroom

For over 20 years Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey's Assistive

Technology Services Department has helped school districts and

teachers integrate children with disabilities into regular classrooms.

Each year, our highly trained, certified staff performs hundreds

of student evaluations and assessments and provides

countless hours of technical assistance and

ongoing support to schools and districts all

around the state.

In addition to the schedule listed in the

catalog, our staff can present these trainings

in your school or district. Our support

is flexible and can be tailored to meet the

needs of a specific program or student.

From Low Tech to High Tech:

Communication Aids

Full Day Session -- $125

Monday, October 1, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Communication happens everywhere: at home, school,

work, and in the community. For individuals with disabilities,

finding a communication solution enables participation

in daily life. Come join us as

we examine the range of communication

aids available to assist

individuals. These solutions may

be as simple as a picture board

with food choices or as complex

as a fully functional portable computer

with speech output.

Teacher Toolkit

Half Day Session -- $69

Thursday, October 4, 2007; 9 a.m. to 12 noon

As a teacher it is often difficult to attend presentations that

offer great information about software and hardware. You

know that you can share the information but that doesn't

mean that the software and hardware will be purchased.

This workshop is about tools that you can find on the

Internet and use to help students gain general knowledge

and reinforce skills in a fun way. Participants will be given

a disc full of resources that can be used with students or

to enhance lessons.

Voice Recognition-- What it can do for

you and your students today

Full Day Session -- $125

Friday, October 12, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Do you have students who have trouble writing, but can

tell you what they want to say? Is voice recognition software

a viable solution for your students right now? Can

voice recognition address the needs of students with

learning disabilities? What about students with speech

impairments? Test drive Dragon Naturally Speaking,

understand what it takes to use voice recognition successfully,

and decide for yourself.

Engineering the Classroom through

Universal Design

Full Day Session -- $125

Tuesday, October 23, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This workshop will focus on ways to adapt the learning

environment to meet the needs of all students. Through

the principles of Universal Design for Learning, we will discuss

the different learning styles and strategies to ensure

that all students are engaged throughout the curriculum.

Participants will take part in activities to determine their

personal learning styles and will leave the workshop with

a variety of tools to help them better meet the needs of

each student. We will also highlight some creative uses of

the tools that may already be in the learning environment.

Autism and Functional Literacy: Writing

and Communication Strategies

Full Day Session -- $125

Thursday, October 25, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Literacy is often overlooked for children perceived as " too

impaired " to participate in reading and writing exercises.

These students do not have the systematic, natural exposure

to reading material that their peers enjoy. Reading

and writing are tools that could open the door to communication

for these students.

From Low Tech to High Tech: Computer

Access

Full Day Session -- $125

Friday, November 2, 2007; 9 .am. to 3 p.m.

Computers are an important part of daily life. For individuals

with disabilities, using a standard computer may be difficult

or impossible. Come join us as we explore available

hardware and software solutions for computer access.

This session will highlight a variety of keyboard and

mouse alternatives, as well as software tools to improve

access.

Making the Most of: Clicker 5

Full Day Session -- $125

Tuesday, November 6, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Clicker is a powerful and incredibly easy-to-use writing

support and multimedia tool, which enables you to write

with whole words, phrases or pictures. It can be used within

any area of the curriculum to support early and struggling

writers. Participants will explore Clicker 5 and the

ready-made resources and learn how to modify them.

Participants will also create a Clicker e-book and receive a

30 day demo CD of boards.

Making the Most of: Kurzweil 3000

Full Day Session -- $125

Tuesday, November 20, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kurzweil 3000, from Kurzweil Educational Systems, is a

powerful learning tool for students with all abilities. Come

join us to explore the full range of features built into this

scan and read electronic text tool. Through hands-on practice,

participants will experience the features of the toolbars,

learn about zone editing, and customize settings for

each student. In addition, we will discuss implementation

issues for using this tool in a school (scanning protocol,

etc.).

The Mouse Hunt: Exploring Mouse

Alternatives

Half Day Session -- $69

Monday, November 26, 2007; 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

How many of us struggle with a standard mouse and

search for something better? This session will focus on the

variety of mouse alternatives available to replace the standard

mouse. Participants will experience devices that provide

mouse access from a variety of methods (head control,

hand, foot, etc.) We will also discuss mouse adjustments

that can be made right in Windows to increase functionality.

Resources will be provided for participants to

obtain additional information.

Using Switches in the Classroom

Half Day Session -- $69

Monday, November 26, 2007; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

When working with students with physical

disabilities, do you find it challenging

to determine what switch

to use, where to put it, and what

to do with it once you have it?

This session will begin with an

overview of the variety of available

switches and provide you with information

on how to conduct a trial using the

switch within the classroom. You will be given resources

for free or low cost switch accessible computer games and

software, switch accessible software for math, reading,

and writing, and ways to use a switch away from the computer.

Participants will have an opportunity to try switches

and see the software in action.

Using Technology to Support Students in

Reading and Writing

Full Day Session -- $125

Thursday, November 29, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Many students struggle with the areas of reading and writing.

Come join us to learn about tools and strategies to

support struggling students. Participants will experience a

wide range of tools from low tech (such as e-text readers

and portable word processors) to high tech (such as scan

and read tools like Kurzweil 3000 and voice recognition

software). Participants will be provided with a resource CD

with examples of many of the tools used during the session.

Making the Most of: Inspiration

Full Day Session -- $125

Tuesday, December 4, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Using the proven power of visual learning, Inspiration

helps 6th to 12th grade students strengthen critical thinking,

comprehension and writing skills across the curriculum.

Inspiration software makes the creation, manipulation,

and transformation of graphic organizers an intuitive

exercise on the computer. Whether in Outline mode (traditional

text / verbal structure) or Diagram mode (to include

shapes, graphics, and connecting lines of relationship),

Inspiration can serve as a conceptual bridge. Participants

will learn how to use the ready-made templates and learn

how to modify them to meet individual needs.

Making the Most of: Boardmaker

Full Day Session -- $125

Thursday, December 13, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Boardmaker is a computer program that allows parents

and teachers to create visual strategies such as picture

schedules, routines, books and just about anything you

can think of. Visual strategies can offer a powerful tool to

help a child who has difficulty with language, paying attention,

following directions, transitions, and daily routines at

home and in school. If you find yourself repeating the

same things over and over, don't get frustrated: VISUAL

STRATEGIES CAN HELP!

Making the Most of: SOLO

Full Day Session -- $125

Tuesday, December 18, 2007; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The SOLO suite of learning tools, from Don ston Inc.,

includes four very powerful software tools: Read:OutLoud,

Draft:Builder, Write:OutLoud, and Co:Writer. Come join us

to explore the features of all these products and learn how

they can work together or seperately to meet the needs of

all students. Through hands-on practice, participants will

experience all four products and learn strategies to implement

these tools in order to foster student success.

Unlock the Power of PowerPoint

Half Day Session -- $69

Wednesday, January 9, 2008; 9 a.m. to 12 noon

Most often when you hear the word PowerPoint, the first

things that come to mind are professional presentations.

PowerPoint is a tool to share information with a large group.

This workshop is about showing participants that

PowerPoint can be used as a tool for students learning.

Participants will be shown strategies to assist students in

the area of written expression, study guides, word study

and as visual reminders.

Making The Connection: A Guide For

Facilitating Peer Relationships In Children

Half Day -- $69

Wednesday, January 9, 2008; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Come join us for this session and learn how to assist children

with disabilities in making social connections with

their non-disabled and disabled peers. Participants will

learn about program adaptations and strategies to ensure

that the adaptations are successful.

Demonstrations will be provided that highlight successes

achieved through two projects: the Bridges Project and

Parent's Night Out.

Considering Assistive Technology: How do

we do that?

Full Day Session -- $125

Friday, January 11, 2008; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to IDEA, school districts must consider assistive

technology needs when developing a student's IEP. What

exactly does that mean? How do school-based teams

determine need for assistive technology?

Using the information developed by the New Jersey

Department of Children and Families, Office of Education

(A Training Series on Assistive Technology Integration in

the Education Process), we will explore the many issues

surrounding assistive technology in education. These

issues will include evaluations, training, and trial periods.

We will also explore a variety of assistive technology tools

related to the 16 performance areas described in the

Office of Education Training Series.

Boardmaker and Beyond!

Full Day Session -- $125

Tuesday, January 15, 2008; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tired of using Boardmaker in the same old way? This

workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced

Boardmaker software users looking for creative ways to

use visually mediated supports in their classrooms.

Participants will explore new ways to use Boardmaker for

literacy, math, communication, preschool activities,

games, recipes, story sequencing, social stories, teaching

vocabulary, articulation practice, conversational prompts,

telling jokes, creating classroom posters and more.

Sample Boardmaker creations will be displayed and

described. Participants will receive a CD of boards and

templates.

Using the Technology You Already Have!

Full Day Session --$125

Thursday, January 17, 2008; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Look around your classroom: Are you using the technology

you currently have to engage your students? Most

classrooms will have at least one computer and many

have a TV as well. This session will focus on creative ways

to utilize the features of your existing technology.

Learn about some very useful features of common software

packages, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Power

Point, etc.), that can help your students improve their reading

and writing skills. We will also explore the accessibility

options built into the Windows operating system that

allow you to customize the functionality and appearance of

the computer to meet each student's unique needs.

Participants will also receive resources, both Web pages

and shareware software programs, that can be used to

accommodate various learning styles.
