Guest guest
They have discovered recently that it's the mercury used in vaccines as a preservative that seems to be the cause of autism. Look up " mercury in vaccines " on the web and you'll get a ton of info. I think they make mercury-free vaccines now. I guess your best bet would be to check to make sure your doc is using these. Mostly though, I thik the benefits outweigh the risks... Of course, I'm sure those with autistic children now would beg to differ... jordybirdmum wrote:I am having a really tough time deciding if I am going to continue having my son immunized. He has had up to his 1 year shots. He has not received the MMR yet. My concern is its (immunizations, particularly the MMR) possible relation to autism. As a former Preschool Director, my knowledge... articles, seminars, communication with dr.s and special needs panels, etc.. were all leaning towards no relation between autism and immunizations. However, when it comes to my son and many recent correlations between the two- I am stuck. I have read testimonies from parents stating their beliefs are that the MMR vaccine caused autism (or forms of autism) in their small children. I have also heard that with relation to the Chicken Pox vaccine, as it's life on the market is about 10 years which corresponds to the recent rise in autism in the last decade. I guess I am just looking for opinions. Any one with similar experiences to what I have expressed. Thanks, Stacie
Guest guest
Request a thimerosol free immunization .... I believe they DO have them for the MMR. Also, you can request that they be broken up instead of all 3 in one shot. Guest guest
Thermerosol is a composite of mercury, right? Gabe's coming up on his next set of immunizations... It's been a while since I looked this stuff up. Angel wrote:Request a thimerosol free immunization .... I believe they DO have them for the MMR. Guest guest
I did some research about the subject and found out the same (it is the mercury in the vaccines that seems to be the cause of autism). I asked my peditrician about the dangers of it and he told me that all vaccines are now free of mercury, except for the MMR. He told me the reason why some people correlate MMR with autism is because you can catch up some signs of autism around the time children receive the MMR and other vaccines (6-24 months). Therefore, in some cases children that may have already had autism receive the shot and when parents find out about the autism they blame it on the vaccine. I copied the following info from pediatrics.about.com " Among the early signs and symptoms that parents and Pediatricians look for to alert them that a child needs further evaluation for autism include not smiling by six months of age not babbling, pointing or using other gestures by 12 months not using single words by age 16 months not using two word phrases by 24 months having a regression in development, with any loss of language or social skills Infants with autism might also avoid eye contact, and as they get older, act as if they are unaware of when people come and go around them. Keep in mind that autism usually isn't diagnosed until about age 3, although some experts believe that some children begin to show subtle signs as early as six months of age " I plan to do more research about his (my brother has mild autism. Talk to your peditrician, get a second opinion from a different doctor. andra I am having a really tough time deciding if I am going to continue > having my son immunized. Guest guest
Hi Stacie, I was worried about this too when it came to the MMR for my boys. In the end I read the actual article in the Lancet that started the MMR/autism debate and decided for myself that he didn't really prove any relation at all (as he actually stated himself in the article) and went ahead with the MMR. This is of course only my personal opinion. with (*9/02) and Alister (*9/02, RCF, Ponseti method, UK) --- jordybirdmum wrote: > I am having a really tough time deciding if I am > going to continue > having my son immunized. Guest guest
Here is a website that I found somewhat helpful and somewhat informative. The responses are right-it is the mercury or the preservative " thimerosol " that researchers have not quite agreed that it is causing the autism epidemic. http://www.909shot.com/ I take the information with a grain of salt. However, I do like the " mercury " calculator. In theory-right now, the only thimerosol vaccines on the market is the flu vaccine-you will see this on the calculator page. I know that I was only vaccinated for 3 groups of diseases-mmr, polio, and dtap. Our kids are getting vaccinated for a whole lot more-however, it is almost 30 years later. I requested that my child receive each vaccine individually and only 1 at time- it made for a lot of visits before he was one but it put my mind at ease. Also-talk to your ped about it. Our ped is waiting until david is 18 months before he gets his mmr(end of range). I also believe chicken pox was a right of passage as a kindergartner-gave it to my two brothers actually-and don't see the need to be vaccinated for it- own feeling. Hope this helps! kathleen mom to david 14 mo fab 12/7 > > I am having a really tough time deciding if I am going to continue > having my son immunized. He has had up to his 1 year shots.
