My SIL's daughter has been " diagnosed " with this but she feels that there is more going on with her little girl. She is having a really hard time getting her ped. to do any kind of testing whatsoever on her...he diagnosed this 3 times without any testing! He has put Mickala on a gelly to loosen her stools repeadly and we are in the opinion that this is NO kind of way to treat her problem as prolonged use of the gelly can cause a whole host of other problems. Mickala has had this problem for over 2 years now, her mom is at the end of her rope. I suggested to her that she should do some research and that I would as well so when she goes in to see her ped. next time, she can go armed with some good info/questions. Guest guest
- From what I remember, you are from Canada so I do not know how the whole referral to a specialist works. I would say though that if she has had bowel issues for 2 years-your niece needs to see a specialist-specifically a pediatric gastroenterologist. I would tell your SIL that she should demand a second opinion-do not stop, proceed directly to Go!! With our insurance in the US, we are fortunate that we do not require referrals(not all plans are like that), so we can take our son to whatever specialist we feel is/would be necessary as long as they were in network. I really believe if it is going on for 2 years-it is not something that she will " grow out of " . I would have your SIL ask her ped how frequently does he see this problem, how often is he treating this problem, what long term results/outcome is there by treating it with this method. I read up briefly just in google(that nasty search engine) and found that lazy bowel is caused by too much laxatives which I am assuming is what the jelly is. So to me, it seems that the doctor is mistreating this child(however, I am not a medical expert). Hope the above questions help. I went to the Sick children's hospital website and they do have a ped gastro clinic-check it out-its very informative.Your SIl is lucky to have you on her side!! take care! kathleen > Hi everyone, > > I was wondering if any of you had any experience with lazy bowl syn. Guest guest
- What was it that got her to the point of Lazy Bowel Synd, that usually refers to a condition brought on by use of laxatives. Was she experiencing constipation prior to this and those were prescribed? Stacie wrote: Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you had any experience with lazy bowl syn. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, I soo agree with you that Obviously, she needs to be seen by a specialist! It can be challenging to get in to see a specialist in Canada, the wait times can be crazy and sometimes you have to really push hard to get the appt. My SIL is a really nice easy going person and also tends to trust everything a doctor says. So for her to get to this point, I know that her daughter is really suffering. Mikeala grabs her tummy and screams in pain at least once a day, she rocks and rocks and it has gotten to the point that she dosen't even want Carole to touch her tummy - Carole used to rub her stomach to help her feel better - she shuts herself in her room and just cries and rocks, she is 4 and a 1/2. I told Carole tonight that she HAS to demand a second opinion. She would feel much better going into that appt. armed with some really insightful questions and she just feels overwhelmed, so I would just love to be able to help her and her baby with this, I figure I have a pretty awesome resource (that she does not have) right here to point me in the right direction! & Grace I really appreciate any info I could get and plan to do as much on my own as needed until we figure this all out. & Grace > > Hi everyone, > > > > I was wondering if any of you had any experience with lazy bowl > syn. Guest guest
My son sees a gastrointerologist (GI). They would be able to run several tests on her to make sure nothing fixable or damaging is causing this. You might try finding one for peds. My son's is wonderful! Re: OT- Have any of you heard of lazy bowl syndrome?? , My daughter was to thought to have this. Since she was very small has had problems with constipation. We would be lucky if she went once every two weeks. The way I understood it is that either the rectul mus. or digiestive track, Was working slow, thus lazy. My daughter is now 5 and we still have to fight with this everyday. Our ped. will not do any testing either. We had thought that maybe something was not anatomically correct in the rectum causing these problems, but have been dealing with this since she was 18 months old and still don't know. We have changed her diet. Wheat bread, no white, more fiber. She also eats bran flakes. Lots of green veg. and apple juice or apple sauce on a daily bases. Most children if they drink apple juice will cause loose stools, but in my daughter it does not. We also do not allow her to have cheese very often. Guest guest
, I also have a 3 year old on Miralax prescribed by her ped. I am continually trying to get her off of it and right now we are on a roll--she hasn't been on it long term since July!! Just once in awhile for a few days. Guest guest
, I have a 3 year old with chronic constipation and has been on Miralax for a long time. BUT, we have currently been off of it since July (except for a couple of days here and there). In July we were up to Canada for a few weeks and my mom suggested trying Danone's Activia Yogurt as the Bifidus culture in it is supposed to be extremely beneficial for constipation. Now, my daughter has the best diet in the WORLD and still only the lax. had previously helped her. But this crazy yog. did the trick. Within a couple of days things were " long and smooth " if you know what I mean. It was unbelieveable. I am so disappointed that we can't get this yog. down in the states. I have tried Bifidus powder mixed with her drinks but it isn't the same. Try loading her up on Activia!!! Guest guest
Hi , Thats what I told her re: the laxatives! I am going to forward a few of these messages to her. She really needs to get Mickala in to see a specialist for testing, it could be so many things. Thanks for your response! & Grace > > Hi everyone, > > > > I was wondering if any of you had any experience with lazy bowl > syn.
