Guest guest
I would venture your child relapsed because he wasn't being treated right in the first place. Dr. P fixed them this time and if you adhere to his rigid schedule of FAB use (with the FAB set correctly to fit your child) you should experience much different results this time! Which FAb are you going to use, the or the Markell? Wearing a cast for 3 weeks is worrisome but most babies do just fine with it. Our Everett out grew his at a couple days past 2 weeks and we had to remove it but he's fine. I suggest you get a couple different people to look at his toes - sounds silly, but if you have other eyes to see them now as " normal " in the cast, they can help you determine later if you think they are swelling or turning blue. Sometims we look at this stuff so much our eyes play tricks on us....like we hardly see our kids grow but someone who hasn't seen them in a month says WOW they really grew! kwim? Good luck with it all. s. Update on Karter's Appt. Just wanted to let everyone know how appt. with Dr. P. went. We were to have tenotomy done Friday, but when Dr. P. saw feet after casts were removed he thinks that he can strech tendon with the casts. He is in his 2nd set of casts this time. He will need to have them on for 2-3 weeks. Dr. P. said we can take the casts off ourselves and go back into the shoes after this. This is 3rd relapse in a year, he is 13 months old, I am very concerned that he will relapse again. Does tenotomy help with relapse? Other Dr. only had shoes at 35 deg. and they have now changed that and maybe that will help. Just know getting to posting because Karter does not like his casts. I know that he is not in pain, but just mad that he has two casts and can not move very well. Also, his leg on his calf was very red when other cast was removed. Is this normal? Never happened anyother time, but now I am worried he might get sores because the cast has to be on for longer. Any way we can tell without removing the casts? Guest guest
If possible try to stay in Iowa a couple days after that last cast is applied because in my experience if anything is going to go wrong, it'll show up pretty quick. But it's rare for anything to go wrong, we had one episode of Everett's cast too tight but we were at the RMD when it happened. This wasn't his last cast. It was late and we couldn't reach Dr. P so we went to the ER and when the ER staff discovered this was one of Dr. Ponseti's patients nobody wanted to touch him! LOL! It was like they were in fear and awe of doing anything with that clubfoot cast and I wondered what wrath Dr. P had handed down to them in the past for messing with his club foot babies. Eventually that night we got hold of Dr. P and he came to his clinic next day (Saturday) to re-do the cast and all was well. s. Update on Karter's Appt. Guest guest
Tabitha, That is great that the tentotomy was not done. Dr. Ponseti is thinking the same for us. We go back again on Wednesday and he will apply the cast that will stay on for 2 plus weeks. There is a chance the surgery will still take place but we will know for sure on Wednesday. ' feet were really red when the cast came off and a little of his calf on one leg was red too. I am interested in knowing if other people have seen the redness as well. Has your child ever had the tentotomy? had one when his was about 6 weeks old. He still relapsed. So if Dr. Ponseti avoids it then I think you guys should be fine. Mine son who is 14 weeks old doesn't like his cast either. At least we are here where it is cool and not at home where it has been 100 degress to keep him from sweating in his cast. Guest guest
Karter will be going back in the Markell's. We had a very hard time keeping right foot in before, but foot was not casted out at all and shoes where at 35. Dr. P. said if this happens again we will need to go to the 's for he is a big boy. We are worried about the $$, but if we have to have 's to keep his feet from a relapse than we will find a way. Our other Dr. said there was no other shoes, so wondering how long 's have been available? We are to start with 20 hr/day when casts come off for two weeks, then down to 18 and he will adjust when we go back in Nov. Dr. P. also said if we made it 2 weeks it would be ok, but try to keep for 3. We will try. thanks Tabitha number23 wrote: I would venture your child relapsed because he wasn't being treated right in the first place. Guest guest
I understand about the cost of 's. We are worried too but we are going to do it. Luckliy I have family who is helping us out since we did not expect all this, a trip to Iowa, two weeks here, my husband drives back 11 hrs tomorrow as he has to be back at work and I will be here until I fly home on Friday night. I am a bit worried about how far we are from here in the event anything should come up with and his cast but I am sure it will all work out. Hang in there. Guest guest
My daughter's legs used to be purple and had the lines from the padding on them every time we removed her casts. She had them removed every two weeks, but she always grew so much that it seemed to affect her circulation. Never had swollen toes, though. It used to make me so nervous. She was casted until she was 5 1/2 months. But now that the casting is over, she doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects. It can be scary, though, and definitely didn't help my anxiety over the whole situation. Good luck to you and your baby. Donna

Guest guest
Tabitha, The 's have been available for almost 2y now actually. But chances are, you won't need them. The Markells are good shoes that most babies can wear with no problems. As long as the foot is fully corrected and you understand how to get them on properly (you do have a copy of the tips file right?) they work just fine and baby is comfortable. You're in good hands and the problem as you know now, was not the shoes but the correction of the foot. I think you'll be impressed with how well he handles them now that you're being treated properly with those wonderful hands. You are very fortunate to be able to have Dr. P. treat Karter, it surely is a blessing and he has many happy days to come with his great feet. You may want to go ahead and cut the holes in the backs of the shoes so that the first time you put them on, you will see if his foot is seated deeply enough. I almost want to say that you *should* do this, especially since you're not going to be fitted the first time by an orthotist (for whatever THAT'S worth sometimes, cough, cough...). It does not ruin the shoes and will surely help you be confident after the cast that he is ready for the shoes without the tenotomy. Little peace of mind never hurts :-* Kori At 08:31 AM 9/25/2005, you wrote: >Karter will be going back in the Markell's.
