Rubbermaid makes a 1-cup container with a straw built into the screw top - the

straw folds down so nothing spills (boy, was that a rotten description!). They

used to come with a purple top (straw is white) and then they started making

them with a blue top with white straw - the blue ones leak, though! So, I have

continued to use the purple top ones for several years and Josh loves it. The

only thing that doesn't work is warm liquids (tried doing " hot " chocolate only

to find that it squirts out the straw). And, I recently took Josh for a glucose

tolerance test and tried to put the cola/carbonated glucose liquid in the

container and the same thing happened - the carbonation! (Josh had never had a

carbonated liquid before - pretty cute watching him try to drink it!)

How spill proof does it need to be? I use these cups from Tupperware

that come with a lid. You put in your own straw into a hole that has

some rubber around it. It is not a cup they can bring from room to

room, but at the kitchen table it spills only a drop or two when

knocked over. It's great for clumsy, older kids, and I like be able

to have a fresh straw.

What I am looking for is something that is stainless steel since I am recently

learning that plastic leaches chemicals into our food and drink and can cause

problems in the long run.

Aaaah. Missed that part. I bought a great stainless steel cup at

Whole Foods with a slide to cover the opening. Again, it's " mostly "

spill-proof when the slide is closed, but not perfect. Ice water stays

cold forever, and it doesn't get that off-taste you get with plastic.

I saw someone with a similar cup from Pampered Chef.

You definitely need pure water with stainless or the fluoride will

leach the aluminum.
