Guest guest
Hi, Seems strange to me that we are allowed to eat more fats, but then we pay for it with loose bowels? Later on, do you get to eat more fats without this diahrea problem -- and does that simply mean your common channel has grown, so you don't get the malabsoprtion benefits? I'm getting confused by this. I have also heard a few times that complex carbs are malabsorbed. Does this mean the vitamin content I might get in some veggies and fruits will not be there for me -- yet the refined sugars go right on through?? I would really like the full scoop on this after surgery, and at 2 years postop if anyone is willing to spelll it out. I also have a sweet tooth, although in the past after not eating sweets for a month or so I don't want them. Thanks. =============================== Hawkins netmaker2@... =============================== " Those who can't laugh at themselves leave others to do the job! Guest guest
> Seems strange to me that we are allowed to eat more fats, but > then we pay for it with loose bowels? I'm 22 months post-op. I can eat pretty much anything and fats don't cause diarrhea for me. My stool may be a bit softer than my " normal " soft stool. But frankly, as long as it's not urgent or causing distress, I couldn't care less what comes out of me and goes down the sewer line. > Later on, do you get to eat more fats without this diahrea > problem -- and does that simply mean your common channel > has grown, so you don't get the malabsoprtion benefits? > I'm getting confused by this. I only have liquid stools for the first month or so, and since then things have progressively firmed up, so yes I do think that intestinal adaptation plays a role, probably to varying degrees according to individual. > I have also heard a few times that complex carbs are > malabsorbed. My guess would be that if you absorb 60% of a particular complex carb, you would also absorb 60% of the nutrients from that food. Simple sugars, as far as I know, don't have any nutritive value, and since they are fully absorbed, they are the one food that we need to keep in moderation always. > I would really like the full scoop on this after surgery, and > at 2 years postop if anyone is willing to spelll it out. At first, anything with sugar tasted way too sweet for me (except chocolate, oddly enough, which never tasted off at all <g>). Gradually, my taste for sweets returned to normal. At this point, 22 months post-op, I do indulge and enjoy a sweet treat of some sort pretty much every day, but I do keep it in moderation. A scoop or two of ice cream, a couple of cookies, or a Dove Promise or two -- I'm quite satisfied by a small serving.
