Guest guest
You know, I thought about that before, especially with this latest deal with Christee needing a doctor, but I didn't think it would be easy for an American family to seek care in Canada since they have nationally funded health care, which usually means long waiting lists to see specialists for Canadians themselves...and I don't know how the system would work for a family that would presumably be paying cash. I doubt that the Canadian hospital would bill an American insurance company and I wonder if that insurance company would ever pay for care in Canada unless it was an emergency (i.e. ER visit). > In our defense ... it IS another country, and normally we would not think to > go to Canada to see a doctor ... but still! lol I gotta admit, I was > slapping my forehead when that came to me .... > > > > Angel > Caitlen 8/29/97 > Arica 8/22/01 > Kai 12/31/02 > > > > > ----Original Message Follows---- > From: " frogabog " <frogabog@q...> > Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot > To: nosurgery4clubfoot > Subject: RE: what do you think? > Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:16:28 -0700 > > OMG Angel... Guest guest
I have left a message with Dr. Pirani's assistant asking what the procedures would be. They are back in the office on Mon, 19th sept. I will post once I find out. I know that they always find room to see any baby with cf, we have never had to wait for an appt. except when Dr. Pirani was away at a conference. In fact when Grace outgrew her cast, I called him on his cell phone, he had just returned from a conference and met us at the hospital within the hour to see her even though he was technically on vacation. So I don't see any kind of wait time being an issue here but as far as cost/billing procedures, I will find out. & Grace > > In our defense ... it IS another country, and normally we would > not think to > > go to Canada to see a doctor ... but still! lol I gotta admit, I > was > > slapping my forehead when that came to me .... > > > > > > > > Angel > > Caitlen 8/29/97 > > Arica 8/22/01 > > Kai 12/31/02 > > > > > > > > > > ----Original Message Follows---- > > From: " frogabog " <frogabog@q...> > > Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > Subject: RE: what do you think? > > Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:16:28 -0700 > > > > OMG Angel... Guest guest
We are Canadian's living here in Wisconsin and have from day one been glad that our son is getting U.S. medical care for his club feet. My husband and I grew up in Windsor, Ontario across the river from Detroit. There have been times when family and friends have actually paid thousands of dollars out of pocket to have medical treatment in Detroit instead of waiting for the Canadian medical system to finally treat them!! oh the horror stories I could tell, BUT I am very happy to hear that things seem to be better (at least out West) and glad you and your children are getting the care that they deserve!!! proud to be Canadian, today Carly (Teddy 3mths) > > > In our defense ... it IS another country, and normally we would > > not think to > > > go to Canada to see a doctor ... but still! lol I gotta admit, > I > > was > > > slapping my forehead when that came to me .... > > > > > > > > > > > > Angel > > > Caitlen 8/29/97 > > > Arica 8/22/01 > > > Kai 12/31/02 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ----Original Message Follows---- > > > From: " frogabog " <frogabog@q...> > > > Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > > To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > > Subject: RE: what do you think? > > > Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:16:28 -0700 > > > > > > OMG Angel... Guest guest
I can understand your sentiments, but the case we were discussing doing this with is very complicated, and the need for an extremely good doc as nearby as possible may well outweigh any difficulties with the America-to-Canada issue. See ... my son already sees " one of the best " but the results have been disheartening ... and we have been to see Dr Ponseti once, but with gas prices going up and him now being over 2, and Iowa being over 1000 miles away ... well, Vancouver, BC is only about 5 hrs drive from here max. There is a possibility that our insurance would pay for it, due to our general proximity. And even if not, given travel expenses, it would likely not be any more expensive than going to Iowa for us. This is all just conjecture right now. Our doc is trying to work on the problems, and who knows what the future holds ... but I may well contact both Dr Ponseti and Dr Pirani about the idea as a back-up. I am thinking .... with all the work Dr Pirani has done overseas, he would be willing to see one American boy if he could acomplish something for us ;-) Angel Caitlen 8/29/97 Arica 8/22/01 Kai 12/31/02 ----Original Message Follows---- Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: Re: Americans seeking care in Canada Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 02:45:19 -0000 We are Canadian's living here in Wisconsin and have from day one been glad that our son is getting U.S. medical care for his club feet. Guest guest
This is too true, I agree that wait times to see a specialist or for surgery are ridiculous!! However Dr. Pirani is just one of those very rare, truly dedicated doctors. He trained with Dr. Ponseti and was key in the start up of the Ugandan project that took Dr. Ponseti's method to Africa. La La La there I go again, singing his praises, I just can't help it, his care gave our daughter a beautiful straight little foot! & Grace > > > > In our defense ... it IS another country, and normally we would > > > not think to > > > > go to Canada to see a doctor ... but still! lol I gotta > admit, > > I > > > was > > > > slapping my forehead when that came to me .... > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Angel > > > > Caitlen 8/29/97 > > > > Arica 8/22/01 > > > > Kai 12/31/02 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ----Original Message Follows---- > > > > From: " frogabog " <frogabog@q...> > > > > Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > > > To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > > > Subject: RE: what do you think? > > > > Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:16:28 -0700 > > > > > > > > OMG Angel... I am expecting a call from her on Monday, I could ask her to have him call you or if it would be OK for me to give his cell number to you. I think you should talk to him and explain the situation, I think he would see Kai right away! Guest guest
Angel, When we were deciding where to go for treatment in March 2003, my husband had a long conversation with Dr Pirani - almost an hour long - and he offered to treat straight away any time, he also offered us different rates because we weren't on the Canadian medical health system. He was very excited that we were in South Africa and told us all about his work in Uganda and other countries. Afterwards we decided to go to Dr Ponseti because at the time we wanted to go Dr Pirani was on a trip to South America doing Ponseti training with doctors there. I can't stress enough what a lovely caring man he sounded like on the phone and how willing he was to help us. Dr Ponseti also gave him a RAVE review and called him his 'evangelist' - because of his endless work in spreading the method to different countries. I would encourage you to speak to him, I'm sure he would find a way to help you. Guest guest
I would like to know if it is possible. For the moment we are going forward with Dr Mosca, but I am also awaiting word back from Dr Ponseti (to whom I mentioned the possibility of seeking out Dr Pirani). If you would not mind, please do ask her about cost and if we can even do it. You might need to expalin a bit that it is a complicated case and that he is far closer to us that Dr Ponseti. Depending on what Dr Ponseti says, I may contact Dr Pirani directly Angel Caitlen 8/29/97 Arica 8/22/01 Kai 12/31/02 ----Original Message Follows---- Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: Re: Americans seeking care in Canada Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 06:13:08 -0000 Angel, did you see my post about talking to Dr. Pirani's asst regarding cost etc? Guest guest
I will talk to his asst. regarding but you may get a different figure (probably much lower) after either speaking with him yourself or through Dr. Ponseti. Good to hear that Dr. Mosca is listening and that Kai will not be needing the ATTT, no one knows our babies like we do and I am sure that your 'mommy eagle eyes' have helped in this decision! What a precious lil trooper, not minding cast # 7, makes me want to reach out and give that sweetie a big hug!!! What color did he pick? I will post after I speak with his asst. If you want me to tell your insurance company that they are not being fair, you just let me know!! good luck Carly > I can understand your sentiments, but the case we were discussing doing this > with is very complicated, and the need for an extremely good doc as nearby > as possible may well outweigh any difficulties with the America-to- Canada > issue. Guest guest
You know that really frustates me... we are all apart of North America and many doctors seek out the training and advice all over the world and why shouldn't there be some sort of NAFTA agreement for health care... are people not as important as building cars and the import/export of products?? Guest guest
I currently am 34 weeks pregnant, and my little guy was diagnosed with CF prenatally at 19 weeks. Within the next week I was in Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto to see one of the best Dr.'s for a consultation, whom also is the surgeon in chief of pediatric orthotics at SK's. As soon as my little guy is born, we are right in there to start Ponseti casts, as we become a priority. I am also lucky that my hospital and Sick Kids are directly across the street from each other, but needless to say, I have not had one issue with seeing a specialist in Canada! > > > > > > In our defense ... it IS another country, and normally we > would > > > > not think to > > > > > go to Canada to see a doctor ... but still! lol I gotta > > admit, > > > I > > > > was > > > > > slapping my forehead when that came to me .... > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Angel > > > > > Caitlen 8/29/97 > > > > > Arica 8/22/01 > > > > > Kai 12/31/02 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ----Original Message Follows---- > > > > > From: " frogabog " <frogabog@q...> > > > > > Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > > > > To: nosurgery4clubfoot > > > > > Subject: RE: what do you think? > > > > > Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:16:28 -0700 > > > > > > > > > > OMG Angel... Guest guest
Ok, I just have to get in on THIS conversation. I am Canadian and living in Arkansas now for the last 2 years. So I have my 2 cents to put in on the whole health care issue, especially since I have " special need " kids.(brittle bones -yes all four of them) 1. Make sure the Dr. in T.O. is a true Ponseti Dr. I think I heard a bad experience on this board about one inT.O. When we were still in Canada we went free of charge to the Shriners Hospital in Montreal and asked specifically for Dr. Benaroch. He and his team are wonderful and he is very particular about doing this exactly the right way according to the protocal. Due to the necessary frequent casting (and we lived in Winnipeg at the time) the Shriners housed me and my daughter in a hotel with food allowance for 5 weeks. It was one of the best times of my life actually. 2. Specialist in Canada. Should you need to see a specialist for a routine check then yes you need to wait. When my D.H. almost died on me from an infection in his heart ( due to congenital birth defect) he was top priority. He never had to wait for his x-rays, or scans or anything. I do realize the Canadina health care is not perfect. Both he and I at different times have had to sit in beds in the hallways of hospitals due to a lack of beds and rooms. There is trouble but frankly I would rather wait in the hall now then have to pay $300 or more just to see a Dr in the ER. like I do here in the States. At least all people get treated, poor or rich or middleclass. 3.Access to care.... I miss the access to care in Canada. Any time one of my kids gets hurt or has been sick enough for me to wonder if I should seek medical advice I just cringe. The thought of having to pay even the co-pay stops me in my tracks. With being Canadian on a temp visa (D.H. is on 1yr work visa, renewable but tied to employer. Kids and I are not allowed to work) and me not allowed to work to help pick up the slack the co-pay sometimes seems impossible because that takes food out of our mouths. It cost enough for the insurance alone! Then the co-pay, or the 80/50% for dental - wait that's after the deductable!!!! What my husband makes is all we get, no room for extras cause neither of us can take on another job to help pay for medical bills. There are many times I have wished to go back to Canada. Unfortunately there have been no or very few job openings in my husbands line of work in Canada. he has been searching every job board there is for 2 1/2 years now and he finds 25:1jobs in favour of the US. Things are changing though. There are even more jobs now in India in his line then in the States.... Now that might have to be a possibility. Ok that was my 3 cents worth. Nice to see other Canadians on this list,eh! and Shalom (bilat, age 3years) sexymummytobe wrote: I currently am 34 weeks pregnant, and my little guy was diagnosed with CF prenatally at 19 weeks.
