Not being a medical doctor, please don't just take my word for it, but

here is my understanding:

An open incision release and a tenotomy are technically the same

thing. Any procedure that releases a tendon is called a tenotomy.

The difference is that in the open incision release the doctor opens

an incision in the back of the leg to sever the achilles tendon. I

believe the incision is usually about 1 to 1 1/2 inches, depending on

the age (size) of the child at the procedure. The tenotomy used in

the Ponseti method is a Percutaneous Tenotomy, which by definition

'through the skin', means that there is no " incision " , just the tiny

puncture mark from the scalpel that is inserted through the skin to

cut the tendon. The key difference from a medical standpoint *should*

be, at least IMO, that the latter does not create the scar tissue the

the open icision does, not to mention the emotional issues that many

kids face growing up with physical scars. Hope this helps.
